Get to know Hematologist-Oncologist Dr. Sumit Sawhney, who serves patients in Florida.

Dr. Sawhney is a fellowship-trained hematologist-oncologist with over three decades of experience in his field. He is affiliated with Broward Health Coral Springs & University Hospital and Medical Center in Florida.

Located in the heart of Coral Springs, Broward Health Coral Springs is a 250-bed hospital offering a full continuum of care featuring a women’s hospital, surgical institute, the Salah Foundation Children’s Hospital, orthopedic care, specialized ER for Kids, and a specialty summer camp for children with diabetes, as well as a community education center with a full array of classes. The doctor’s acclaimed career in medicine began after he earned his medical degree from the University College of Medical Sciences in Delhi, India in 1988. Upon relocating to the United States, he went on to complete his residency in internal medicine and his fellowship in hematology-oncology at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Chicago.

Licensed to practice medicine in Illinois and Florida, Dr. Sawhney is a member of the American College of Physicians (ACP). The ACP is a national organization of internists, who specialize in the diagnosis, treatment, and care of adults.

Hematology is the branch of medicine concerned with the study of the cause, prognosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases related to blood. Oncology is a branch of medicine that deals with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer. A hematologist-oncologist is a physician who specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, or prevention of cancer, malignant blood diseases such as leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma, and blood disorders such as iron-deficiency anemia, clotting abnormalities, hemophilia, and sickle-cell disease.
