Jeremie M. Axe, MD, a board-certified and dual fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon, has been a partner with First State Orthopaedics since 2015, enhancing access to high-quality orthopaedic care for patients throughout Delaware. With locations in the Sabre Building in Newark, as well as Middletown and Smyrna, Dr. Axe is dedicated to providing comprehensive services in orthopaedic surgery, sports medicine, and specialized care for shoulder and elbow conditions. His patients travel from the surrounding Mid-Atlantic states and even as far as California and Florida. He performs more shoulder surgery than any other surgeon in Delaware. These procedures include labral, biceps and rotator cuff repairs, as well as shoulder replacements. Each shoulder replacement receives a preoperative 3-D computer plan to ensure intra-operative success. Dr. Axe is the only shoulder surgeon in Delaware to have a shoulder research database to track all of his patients’ outcomes in real time.
Dr. Axe’s extensive training and experience make him a leader in his field. He graduated from Jefferson Medical College, where he began his journey into medicine. Following this, he completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at Tufts Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts. To further hone his expertise, Dr. Axe completed an orthopaedic sports medicine fellowship at the prestigious American Sports Medicine Institute with Dr. James Andrews and followed with a second fellowship in shoulder and elbow surgery at Harvard. His second fellowship included several months abroad studying shoulder surgery with experts in Europe.
As a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, Dr. Axe is committed to maintaining the highest standards in patient care. He is also an active member of the Medical Society of Delaware, the American Association of Orthopaedic Medicine, and the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, where he collaborates with peers to advance the field of orthopaedics and improve patient outcomes.
Dr. Axe holds several prominent positions in the healthcare community, including President of the Medical Staff and Orthopaedic Director at Encompass Health in Middletown, Delaware. He serves on the National Board of Trustees for the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF) and is an Affiliate Professor of Physical Therapy at the University of Delaware.
