Get to know Surgical Oncologist Dr. Emery Minnard, who serves patients in Gretna and Marrero, Louisiana.

Dr. Minnard is a board-certified and fellowship-trained surgical oncologist with a special expertise in hepatobiliary surgery. In practice since 1998, he tends to patients at Ochsner Medical Center – West Bank & West Jefferson Medical Center.

Ochsner Medical Center – West Bank is a 180-bed general medical and surgical acute care facility, located on the mighty Mississippi River in Gretna, Louisiana. The Center offers comprehensive medical services provided by a multidisciplinary team, including more than 500 board-certified or board-eligible physicians, a highly-trained nursing staff, and other skilled allied-health professionals.

As a 419-bed not-for-profit hospital located in Marrero, West Jefferson Medical Center is staffed with over 450 physicians practicing in over 50 specialties. Its mission is to provide quality care in a comforting and cost-effective manner.

Following the completion of his undergraduate degree at Xavier University in New Orleans, Dr. Minnard went on to obtain his medical degree from Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee. He completed his residency in general surgery at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan, followed by his fellowship in surgical oncology at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. 

A member of the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons, the doctor is board-certified in general surgery by the American Board of Surgery, which is an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge. He is also an Adjunct Instructor of Surgery at the Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans.

Surgical oncology is the branch of surgery applied to oncology. It focuses on the surgical management of tumors, especially cancerous tumors. A surgical oncologist removes the tumor and nearby tissue during surgery. He or she also performs certain types of biopsies to help diagnose cancer.
