Get to know Radiation Oncologist Dr. Amtullah Khan, who serves patients in Somerset, Kentucky. 

Dr. Khan is a board-certified radiation oncologist and a Fellow of the American College of Radiation Oncology (FACRO). She is in practice with the Cancer Treatment Center of Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital. 

Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital is a 295-bed acute care facility, providing healthcare services for an 11-county service area in south central Kentucky. A modern, state-of-the-art facility, the hospital offers cardiac care and an advanced neurosurgery program with Spine Center accreditation. It also has a complete clinical laboratory, 24-hour ER, intensive care units, surgical services (including orthopedic and urological), and diagnostic imaging. Other specialty services include women’s and children’s services, a Level II neonatal nursery, cardiopulmonary services, behavioral health unit, and inpatient rehabilitation.

Educated in Pakistan, Dr. Khan graduated with her medical degree from Kabir Medical College in 1980. She then relocated to the United States, performing her residency at Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital in the Chicagoland area in 1987.

Achieving Diplomate status, she is board-certified through the American Board of Radiology (ABR). The mission of the ABR is to serve patients, the public, and the medical profession by certifying that its diplomates have acquired, demonstrated, and maintained a requisite standard of knowledge, skill, and understanding essential to the safe and competent practice of diagnostic radiology, radiation oncology, and medical physics.

Radiation oncology is a medical specialty that involves the controlled use of radiation to treat cancer. It is one of the three primary specialties – the other two being surgical and medical oncology – involved in the treatment of cancer. A radiation oncologist is a specialist physician who uses ionizing radiation in the treatment of cancer.
