Dr. Tiesenga received his Doctor of Medicine (MD) from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in 1991. He went on to complete a residency at Illinois Masonic Medical Center in Chicago in 1992. As a general surgeon, Dr. Tiesenga specializes in abdominal contents including the esophagus, stomach, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, and often thyroid glands. General surgeons are able to deal with almost any surgical or critical care emergency, also involving skin or soft tissue trauma. 

Dr. Tiesenga is board certified in surgery by the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The ABS is an independent, nonprofit organization founded in 1937 to provide board certification to individuals who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge in the field of surgery. 

Dr. Tiesenga is affiliated with many of the hospitals in the Chicago area including West Suburban Hospital Medical Center and Rush Oak Park Hospital.
