How long does it take to recover from dental surgery?
That's a bit of an open-ended question. What type of surgery? If extractions, then how many teeth and are they impacted, any health issues? Typical procedures might be a 2-3 day recovery, some you would feel normal the next day, and some could be a week. READ MORE
What happens after a sinus lift and bone graft?
The graft, which is placed under the sinus following the "lift", is replaced with your own bone during the healing over the following 6 months. Typically, dental implants would then be placed into that new bone. READ MORE
Is sinus lift surgery safe?
That procedure has a very safe track record if done by a board-certified specialist. The biggest risk is typically infection, and that would be less than a 5% risk. READ MORE
How bad does a tooth need to be to be extracted?
Dental abscesses can lead to infections that spread through the head or neck area and could require hospital stay, IV antibiotics, and even become life threatening. Your body cannot solve that problem without help, so get the tooth out as soon as possible and your recovery and problems will be as limited as possible. READ MORE
How soon after tooth extraction can I use toothpaste?
Immediately, just go light on the amount and rinse well after brushing. Stay away from brushing right at the extraction site for at least a week. READ MORE
What causes extreme pain after tooth extraction?
Typically, you would not expect "extreme" pain after an extraction unless the tooth had other circumstances that would cause that such as an abscess or it was impacted. Extreme pain should be evaluated by whoever did the extraction to be sure it is not a sign of a complication. READ MORE

Does open bite get worse over time?
If the cause is jaw growth irregularity, then no. It could be, in more unusual cases, from degeneration of the TMJ (jaw joint) and then it would worsen. You should have a consult with an OMFS or orthodontist to diagnose the reason for the open bite. READ MORE
Do you get braces before or after jaw surgery?
Most typically the orthodontic work would start prior to surgery, the surgery would be done 2/3 to 3/4 of the way through and the remainder of the ortho would be completed after surgery. There are some cases where the surgery can be done first, and the ortho following recovery, but those are more limited. READ MORE
How is TMJ recognized in an x-ray?
By evaluating the bony structures of the joint which can be altered by problems within the joint. An MRI is often times also required to visualize the meniscus (disc) within the joint as it will not show up on an x-ray. READ MORE
Can bone regenerate after periodontal disease?
Typically not, there is not currently a predictable treatment to get bone to reattach safely to the tooth root once the bone loss has taken place. READ MORE
How long after jaw surgery can you chew?
Very soft foods right away, about half way to normal diet after 6 weeks and returning to full function after 12 weeks. READ MORE
How long after jaw surgery can you open your mouth?
Right away. Most surgeons performing orthognathic surgery today would NOT have a time frame after surgery requiring you to have your mouth wired shut unless there were complications. READ MORE
How common is jaw surgery relapse?
Very rare with the use of rigid fixation (screws and plates). READ MORE
What is the recovery time for TMJ surgery?
That depends on what surgery you are having done. After TMJ arthroscopy, you will typically feel fine just in a day or 2. An Arthroplasty might take an additional 1-2 days, but is also typically pretty quick. A total joint replacement might be 7-10 days. READ MORE
