I'm having some severe chest pain with anxiety. Is this dangerous? What could it be?
Hello, an important part of the work of a mental health provider is to understand and then treat psychiatric illness. We first need to assure we are in fact working with someone who has a psychiatric disorder. Part of that process is ruling out other causes of your psychiatric symptoms. Many medical concerns can be occurring in a person's life and present as a psychiatric condition. I make certain to have my patients see their medical doctor to rule out a medical cause of their psychiatric complains. Once that is done I feel comfortable treating the psychiatric problem. So, get evaluated by your family doc then call a psychologist. Hope this helps! Dr Crone 443-207-1809 READ MORE
My son watches the same movie over and over
Hello, children like routine and predictability. Most children have a "go to" movie(s) and will watch regularly. The trick in evaluating whether something is a problem is if it starts to create problems. Will he only watch that movie? Does he shunn all other things? Is he obsessive in areas of his life? Does he have interest in only one area of his life, e.g., knows everything about dinosaurs? If you believe he has any significant problems outside of the movie please schedule an appointment with a pediatric psychologist. If you desire do discuss this further please call my office to talk with me. I can be reached at 443-207-1809. Thank you for the question and I hope the response was helpful. Dr. Crone READ MORE
Patient privacy when it's a child being seen
A great question! Each state has different guidelines on when children can seek mental health treatment and be considered an adult in terms of their privacy. Ask the provider what the laws governing privacy in your state are. For minors, what I do is discuss the law with the parents and child, but create a sense of privacy and safety for the child to be open so they do not feel like I am going to share everything with their parents. I let everyone know that there are certain things I must tell parents, such as anything dangerous or life-threatening going on, but I'd like to keep other less concerning things between the child and this writer. At the end of each session, I will provide an update on areas which we have all agreed is open for discussion. I know I can't develop a good relationship with the child if I am telling their parents everything; it's a balance that parents must learn to tolerate and trust. I hope this is helpful. How important is having friends?
Hello and thank you for such an important question. At 12 years-old we anticipate that children will desire friendships and to socialize with her peers. When we don't see that we understandably get concerned. One thing to be aware of is, this generation does much of their communicating/socializing through phones/ipods/computers/tablets and we may not see that very often. If you are finding that she does not socialize at all, even with social media, then we need to do some investigation. Some of my first thoughts are, is she anxious around her peers? Does she feel uncomfortable, as if they may be harshly judging her. Do you see her avoid opportunities for socialization? Another question I would wonder is her actual desire for friendships. In your question, you stated that she does not "seem to be upset by this at all," but I would want to follow up with that. If you feel you do not get a better understanding of this situation, a therapist is a great place to start and have things evaluated and understood. Should you desire to contact me, please feel free at, 4430207-1809. Take care and that was a great question! Dr. C READ MORE
