Get to know Ophthalmologist Dr. Matthew B. Mills, who serves patients in Reno, Nevada.

Dr. Mills is the owner and lead ophthalmologist at Eye Care Professionals in Reno, Nevada. He is a skilled eye surgeon specializing in LASIK, cataracts, and glaucoma.

“It’s very fulfilling to give a person back the gift of eyesight. Helping people is why I do this… and why I devote myself to raising the standard of care and expanding what is possible through ophthalmic care. My goal is to provide the very best quality of care possible, to do it ethically and conscientiously and to help people see as well as is humanly possible. And that includes offering care at the leading edge of my profession” expressed the doctor. 

Alongside his clinical role, Dr. Mills serves as a Clinical Professor of Surgery at the University of Nevada School of Medicine.

Prior to his current endeavors, he served as the Medical Director of Sierra Vista Surgery Center (2006–2009), and as the Chief of Ophthalmology at Irwin Army Medical Center (1996–1999).

Graduating with his Bachelor of Science degree in Houston Baptist University, Dr. Mills went on to earn his medical degree from UT Southwestern Medical School in 1992. He then performed his internship at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. followed by his residency in ophthalmology at Louisiana State University Medical Center.

“In school, subjects like physics, calculus and chemistry always came fairly easily to me. So I entered college planning to become an engineer. As I continued to have academic success, I began to consider a career in medicine. My father, whose friend was an ophthalmologist, suggested that ophthalmology was a gratifying field in which one can make an enormous impact for others. During medical school, I considered several specialties, but I always kept coming back to ophthalmology. I saw it as a great opportunity to really help people by restoring one of their most vital senses. I was also drawn to the ever-advancing technology and the detailed skill that’s involved. Another aspect that really stood out for me was the high success rates of ophthalmic surgery and the ability to change lives for the better” stated Dr. Mills. 

Serving as a Major in the United States Army Medical Corps (1989-2000), he attained board certification through the American Board of Ophthalmology (ABO). The ABO is an independent, non-profit organization responsible for certifying ophthalmologists in the United States of America.

Among his professional affiliations, Dr. Mills is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgery, the Nevada Ophthalmology Society, and the Washoe County Medical Society.

Practicing medicine in Nevada, he is affiliated with St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center-Reno and Renown Regional Medical Center.

Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine and surgery, which deals with the diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders. Ophthalmologists are experts in the diseases, functions, and anatomy of the eye. They may provide routine care such as vision testing, as well as prescribe and fit eyeglasses or contact lenses. However, ophthalmologists are also surgeons. They repair traumatic injuries to the eye and perform cataract, glaucoma, and corneal surgery.

As a testament to his success, Dr. Mills has been the recipient of Patients’ Choice Award (2017, 2016) and On-Time Doctor Award (2017, 2016).
