Back in 1984, he earned his medical degree from the Northeast Ohio Medical University. He went on to further his training by completing an internship with the Summa Health System in 1985, followed by a residency in psychiatry at the University of California, Irvine in 1989.

Distinguished as a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association (FAPA), the doctor is board-certified in psychiatry, addiction psychiatry, forensic psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry, and consultation-liaison psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). The ABPN is a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to serving the professions of psychiatry and neurology.

In good standing with a number of professional organizations, Dr. Sangdahl is an active member of the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law, the American Medical Association, the California Medical Association, and the American Geriatrics Society.
