Dr. Lawrence Proano, MD

Dr. Lawrence Proano graduated from Rush University Medical School in Chicago, Illinois, and completed a resident training program in Emergency Medicine at Denver General Hospital. He subsequently attained a Diploma in Tropical Medicine from the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin, Ireland.
He was a faculty member at Rhode Island Hospital as part of the Emergency Medicine Training Progam of Brown University, from its inception till 2017. While a faculty member, he founded and co-directed an International Emergency Medicine Fellowship for Emergency Medicine Residency Graduates. His program was comprised of two Fellows a year, who completed a project in Global Health, while concurrently attaining an MPH from the Brown University School of Public Health.
Dr. Proano has more than 20 years of experience in medical work and teaching in developing countries. He has participated in medical relief operations in Africa and the South Pacific, and has served as a consultant on several projects in Global Health. Dr. Proano has lectured extensively on global health, and is an author of over 30 medical articles as well as several textbook chapters. His most recent book publication is the Oxford American Handbook of Disaster Medicine.
Dr. Proano is an Oral Examiner for the American Board of Emergency Medicine, for EM resident graduates applying for Board Certification.
After leaving academic medicine, he was full time at Nantucket Cottage Hospital Emergency Department for 3 years. He currently is on the emergency department staff for the CharterCare Health Partners System in North Providence, RI, which includes Roger Williams Hospital and Our Lady of Fatima Hospital.
