Do medicines help in treating varicose veins?
Pycnogenol has been implicated in improving vein health. But studies don’t necessarily prove it. Surgery is really the only way to effectively treat varicose veins. My father has blood clots in his legs. What should be the course of treatment?
Hypertension does not by itself cause blood clots in the legs. Are they arterial clots or venous clots? Venous clots are caused by blood stasis, hypercoagulable state, or epithelial cancer (Virchow’s triad). Blood thinners are the recommended therapy. Three to six months duration. READ MORE
What is the recovery period after a vascular surgery?
Endovascular repair of an aortic aneurysm should allow him to leave the hospital after 1 day. He can resume normal activities after a week, in my opinion. READ MORE

Raynaud’s disease is small vessel occlusive disease of the upper extremity that can cause loss of the fingers. Raynaud's syndrome is similar, but very different in terms of tissue loss. It’s important to distinguish between the two. Vascular surgery may help Raynauds disease, but not raynauds syndrome. READ MORE

Is there a possibility of a patient suffering a heart attack during a vascular surgery?
I’m general, the risk of death is around 2-3%. Much more risk for open thoracic aortic surgery. Less for dialysis access surgery. The age of the patient and their medical history are most important. Current heart failure or angina are the greatest risks. READ MORE
Can PAD be treated with a surgery?
Sure it can. Speak with a vascular surgeon. The indications are clear if surgery is needed. In general, asymptomatic PAD doesn’t need treatment. Aneurysms need to be managed, though. READ MORE
What are the factors causing venous insufficiency?
Blood clots and venous disease are generally unrelated. Blood clots can occur due to cancer. Venous disease usually involves the legs. READ MORE
What are the main causes of an arterial blockage?
All arteries get diseased. Cholesterol is the causative agent. How quickly your arteries get blocked depends upon a number of factors. Inherited hypercholesterolemia is a significant cause. Diet is secondary. Managing cholesterol is important, but anti hypercholesterol drugs have side effects in some patients. Speak to your PCP about your cholesterol. Exercise regularly, and read about a vegan diet. This is the way to control the risk of significant arterial blockages. READ MORE
What are the risks involved in a vascular surgery?
Vascular surgery has no primary role in treating diabetic neuropathy. What risks are involved in any operation to treat vascular disease depends on which operation the patient is having. Most patients with vascular disease are older(60+) and most have heart disease. The most common complication from surgery in a diabetic patient is heart attack in the perioperarive period. Pneumonia and wound infection are also risks. See a cardiologist for preoperative cardiac assessment. Get out of the hospital as soon as possible. READ MORE
