Dr. Shea is a prominent physician in the field of anesthesiology, currently affiliated with Bon Secours – Southside Medical Center.

Bon Secours – Southside Medical Center is a 300-bed hospital near the Petersburg, VA tri-cities, VA area. The hospital was originally started in 1948 by the city of Petersburg, but was sold to Community Health Systems in 2003 and relocated. Back in 1985, Dr. Shea graduated with his medical degree from the University of Mississippi School of Medicine. He then went on to perform his residency in internal medicine at Worcester City Hospital in 1987, and his residency in anesthesiology at St Elizabeth’s Medical Center in 1990.

Licensed to practice medicine in Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina, he is board-certified in anesthesiology by the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA). As the certifying body for anesthesiologists since 1938, the ABA is committed to partnering with physicians to advance lifelong learning and exceptional patient care. Its mission is to advance the highest standards of the practice of anesthesiology.

Anesthesiology is the medical specialty concerned with the total perioperative care of patients before, during, and after surgery. It encompasses anesthesia, intensive care medicine, critical emergency medicine, and pain medicine. Anesthesiologists have the primary responsibility of monitoring the patient’s vital signs during surgery. In addition to basic measurements such as pulse, blood pressure, and temperature, they measure the patient’s respiration.
