Dr. Bonnie Lee Berger D.C.'s Expert Contributions
  • Physical activity level?

Water aerobics is best and bicycling is second best. You should try and see if a daily regimen of 10 minutes a day is something you can do pain free. After a week try increasing it to 20 minutes. Water aerobics provide resistance without the gravity so it should (typically) not strain your knee or back too much. READ MORE

  • Can chiropractors pop your back if you have surgery with rods?

Not in the area with the rods, we can't. Those segments aren't meant to move. READ MORE

  • Knee pain?

Without knowing how this happened I really can't be specific in my answer. If this occurred after going camping you might want to get tested for Lyme's disease. A blood test will tell you if you have that. If it occurred after vigorous exercise(s) it could be bad tendonitis or a ruptured hamstring tendon. You need to get assessed for that by an orthopedic doctor or a chiropractor. READ MORE

  • Knee pain?

At 50 years old there is a high likelihood of loss of cartilage in that joint. See a doctor about getting an x-ray for your knee. If it is not "wear and tear" arthritis (osteoarthritis of degenerative joint disease) then you have tendonitis. Find a chiropractor or physical therapist that can treat you with a Class IV Laser. That is one of the best p.t. machines out there for chronic inflammation. READ MORE

  • I am having pain in my buttocks when I sit. What could this be?

Most likely, it is something called "piriformis syndrome." Chiropractic can definitely help with that! It is tension, or spasm, in the piriformis muscle caused by structural imbalance in the back, pelvis or even the feet. READ MORE

  • Why does my back feel sore?

There is no research that demonstrates for certain that back pain is related to being overweight. More likely, depending on your age, back pain relates to posture and ergonomics, or, the way you sit and stand while you work, rest, and exercise. Please contact a chiropractor and have some X-rays of your back and get some treatment before this develops into something more serious like arthritis or a herniated disc. READ MORE

  • I have a frozen shoulder. What should I do?

Chiropractic and physical therapy could very likely help. READ MORE

  • I am suffering from anterior tibial tendinitis. Should I quit my job?

Talk to your doctor about getting orthotics in your shoes. Very often, this is due to malposition of the feet and just needs some extra support. If your job requires you to stand for long periods of time you might consider asking your bosses for a cashiers mat to stand on. READ MORE

  • I have lipoma under my arms. Can a chiropractor help?

Please seek an opinion from your primary care physician. Lipomas can grow in the most inconvenient places and cause some pain but usually, they aren't painful. You might have to have this one surgically removed. READ MORE

  • What causes slipping rib?

I am not sure what kind of doctor would diagnose a "slipping rib." I am not familiar with this diagnosis. However, as a chiropractor I would call this a rib that is not moving properly due to postural changes (a thing we call a "subluxation.") However, those rarely cause radiating pain to the abdomen. If this has gone on longer than 6 weeks please seek care with your primary care physician. READ MORE

  • Why is there pain in my neck and head every morning?

The cause could be the age of your pillow or mattress or something you are doing at work. The posture of your head and neck while working, exercising and resting are important (we call this ergonomics). My recommendation is to see a chiropractor, get X-rays of your neck (depending on your age and findings in an exam), and get some regular care before this develops into arthritis or a herniated disc. READ MORE

  • My husband has a bone growth in his ankle. What should we do?

The first step is to see an orthopedist and get an x-ray. This could be anything from cancer to arthritis. Don't wait! READ MORE

  • I am having severe neck pain. What could be the reason?

Pain that severe could be anything from very bad muscle spasm to a herniated disc to arthritis. My recommendation is to see your primary care physician, have x-rays and an MRI. READ MORE

  • Experiencing numbness and pain after elbow fracture treatment. Why is this happening?

This could be damage to the radial or ulnar nerve (depending on where and what you fractured in your elbow) or it could be Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy or Sudeck's atrophy. Reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome (RSDS), also known as complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), is a disorder of the sympathetic nervous system that is characterized by chronic, severe pain. The sympathetic nervous system is that part of the autonomic nervous system that regulates involuntary functions of the body such as sweating and raising the hairs on the backs of your arms when you become frightened. Please return to the doctor who treated your elbow and have an MRI done and possibly consult with a neurologist. READ MORE

  • My left shoulder is broader than the right. Is this a growth problem?

I doubt if this is a growth defect unless you have been told you have a condition called "cleidocranial dysostosis." It is diagnosed with an x-ray and your shoulder would dislocate easily. Also, it could be that you broke your collar bone (clavicle in doctor talk) years ago and it did not heal properly. Barring those two issues, it is a biomechanical problem (how your joints and muscles work together) from working one side harder than the other, postural issues due to ergonomics (how your desk and computer is set up) of your work place or an injury from years ago. I recommend a proper examination by a chiropractor to diagnose what is going on and correct it. Over the years this imbalance could lead to arthritis in that shoulder. READ MORE

  • My mother has developed a problem of shaking hands. What could be the reason behind it?

There are lots of reasons for tremors (shaking hands). A neurologic consultation is important to discover the cause. Many people develop a slight tremor as they age and we call that "senile tremor" (which DOES NOT mean your mother is getting dementia), but it does mean the part of the brain that controls her motion is not working as good as it used to. A more serious condition could be something called "Parkinson's". It is a progressive condition and should be taken seriously. There are other causes, too numerous to list, but that is why you need to consult a professional. Please consult a neurologist about this, soon. READ MORE

  • My father is suffering from severe back pain. Can it be treated with manual adjustment of the spine?

Yes, chiropractic manual therapy can help. My suggestion is that you find a reputable chiropractor, get an x-ray of his low back, maybe an MRI depending on what is on the x-ray and discuss treatment options and start from there. READ MORE

  • Is it bad to suddenly stop chiropractic care?

Not in the short-term. In the long-term, you may experience stiffness and there is some clinical evidence that keeping your joints moving prevents the breakdown of your cartilage. READ MORE

  • Very tight neck

Yes, it can. Chiropractic treatments are specifically designed to increase range of motion of the spine. READ MORE

  • Do chiropractors typically take x-rays?

It is quite typical. READ MORE
