Get to know Family Physician Dr. Fabricio Jenaro Zuniga, who serves patients in Bay City, Texas.
Recognized as a top family physician, Dr. Zuniga tends to patients at Matagorda Medical Group in Bay City, Texas. Founded in 2012, the multi-specialty physician group practice strives to help the communities it serves to achieve or maintain optimal health by providing excellent medical care to every patient, encouraging prevention, and supporting health education. It is closely aligned with the mission of Matagorda Regional Medical Center.
After graduating with his medical degree from the University of Medical Sciences in his home country of Costa Rica, Dr. Zuniga worked in several regional hospitals, emergency rooms, and clinics to provide medical care to patients in rural communities. He then moved to the United States in 2003 after being accepted into the Corpus Christi Family Medicine Residency Program. This program is widely regarded as one of the most competitive medical training programs in Texas and is affiliated with the Texas A&M University Health Science Center at Christus Spohn Hospital Memorial. During the program, Dr. Zuniga excelled as an intern and was awarded the Victor C. Calma MD award for outstanding first-year family medicine resident before being named Chief Resident in 2005.
After graduating in 2006, he was awarded the Henry F. Harren MD Award for Excellence in Family Medicine and was accepted to the Hospital Medicine Fellowship Program at Christus Spohn, where he trained as a Fellow in Hospital Medicine until 2007.
Dr. Zuniga has practiced full-spectrum outpatient and hospital medicine since 2006 and has remained active in medical education. He has taught numerous family and internal medicine residents and has demonstrated the importance of compassion, active listening, and good bedside manner. Whether in a clinic, hospital, or nursing home, he considers it an honor to care for the people of his community.
Dr. Zuniga remains active with the medical staff of Matagorda Regional Medical Center, he works closely with the Administration and multiple departments and sits on various committees. He is the Vice Chief of Staff and is also the chairman of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee and Credentialing Committee. These positions enable him to streamline and improve the care provided to the community by working on projects that emphasize the quality of care and also establishing standards in the delivery of care while adopting measures to maintain the hospital standard and to remain up to par with the rest of medical centers in the region.
This physician also has the responsibility of being the Medical Director of Matagorda Medical Group, where he works on recruiting, implementing projects and working on solutions to help this multi-specialty group in continuing to deliver exemplary care to Bay City and its surrounding communities.
As part of his community outreach, Dr. Zuniga is the Medical Director for A-Med Hospice and Palliative Care, a company dedicated to providing services to patients with terminal illnesses either at home or at the hospital, with a robust staff of nurses, social workers, pharmacists, care providers, chaplains, and liaisons, he ensures patients and their families are comforted and treated with expertise and compassion during their battle with cancer, dementia, neurodegenerative disorders, end-stage cardiac, pulmonary or renal disease amongst others.
A member of the Texas Medical Association, the doctor is board-certified in family medicine by the American Board of Family Medicine, a non-profit, independent medical association of American physicians who practice in family medicine and its sub-specialties.
