A Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and a Fellow of the American Medical Association, the doctor is board-certified in ophthalmology by the American Board of Ophthalmology, which is an independent, non-profit organization responsible for certifying ophthalmologists in the United States of America. 

Following his undergraduate education, Dr. Schwartz earned his medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore. He then went on to complete an internship in internal medicine at Georgetown University Hospital, followed by a residency in ophthalmology at Washington Hospital Center, where he served as Chief Resident.

Wanting to further his training, he completed a glaucoma subspeciality fellowship at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, which is Ranked #1 by U.S. News & World Report. 

Named one of Washingtonian Magazine’s Top Doctors and listed in the National Guide of America’s Top Ophthalmologists & the Washington DC-Baltimore-Northern Virginia Doctors Guide, Dr. Schwartz is a member of the Practicing Ophthalmologists Curriculum Committee for the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Among his various accolades, he has been the recipient of the Joseph Dessoff Award in Ophthalmology from Washington Hospital Center and the Resident’s Day Research Award (1st place). He has also conducted peer-reviewed journal publications on medical and surgical management of routine and complex glaucoma cases, as well as the use of diagnostic imaging techniques after glaucoma surgery.

With a passion for his profession, Dr. Schwartz does work abroad to train local surgeons in advanced surgical techniques. He has done mission work in Peru and Ghana where he treats complex cases and trains local physicians.
