Can cancer cells be removed surgically?
Great question! Individual cancer cells are impossible to remove surgically. It is only when the individual cells form a tumor that can be seen on imaging or felt that we can remove the tumor. That is why sometimes after the removal of the tumor some patients may need chemotherapy and radiation. The chemotherapy is given to address any individual cancer cells that may be left in the blood stream. Radiation is given to the area of the tumor to kill any individual cells that may be left behind after the removal of the tumor. READ MORE
Surgical oncologist for a third opinion?
There are 3 different types of oncologists for breast cancer- medical oncologists, surgical oncologists and radiation oncologists. All 3 of these specialists work together to treat each individual patient. Medical oncologists give chemotherapy and endocrine therapy to treat the breast cancer. Surgical oncologists remove the cancer surgically. Radiation oncologists deliver radiation to prevent the cancer from returning locally. Your sister should be seeing each one of those specialties. General surgeons also treat breast cancer patients, but a surgical oncologist has undergone additional training for cancer surgery. Surgical oncologists do not offer additional services that are available with other specialties but are trained in all the specialties and look at each patient both from the perspective of their specialty as well as the other specialties. I hope this helps. READ MORE

Dr. Curcio is a fellowship-trained breast surgeon providing individualized care to patients with breast concerns. Her practice includes benign and malignant breast diagnoses.
In affiliation with Nuvance Health, she practices out of Nuvance Health Medical Practice – Breast Surgery Rhinebeck, Nuvance Health Medical Practices – Breast Surgery Kingston, and Nuvance Health Medical Practice – Breast Surgery Poughkeepsie. She is also affiliated with Northern Dutchess Hospital and Vassar Brothers Medical Center.
Providing the latest medical treatments in breast care, Dr. Curcio understands the emotional issues of a breast disease or cancer diagnosis. She herself was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 37.
“I chose this field because of my own experiences with cancer care and with my family members. My greatest reward is being able to guide the patient through a difficult process with compassion and advocacy” expressed Dr. Curcio.
Passionate about providing treatment, she individualizes each patient’s care plan to their specific needs. She strongly believes that cancer care must include lifestyle changes to focus on healthier habits to reduce future events. Her practice also focuses on breast cancer risk reduction, education, and access genetic testing to patients with a family history of breast cancer.
A 1988 graduate of George Washington School of Medicine, Dr. Curcio went on to perform her postgraduate training in general surgery at George Washington University Hospital. She then completed a fellowship in surgical oncology at City of Hope National Medical Center.
Although her fellowship training was in surgical oncology, the experience of a cancer diagnosis motivated her to provide compassionate, high-level breast care and focus on breast surgery.
“My training, previous years of professional experience, and my own personal experience provides the patient with a level of compassion and understanding that others may not be able to provide” stated Dr. Curcio.
A member of the American College of Surgeons, she is board-certified in general surgery by the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The ABS is an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge.
Breast surgeons perform breast biopsies, lumpectomy, mastectomy, oncoplastic procedures, and other surgeries to treat many benign and malignant breast conditions, including breast cancer in both men and women. They also care for patients at risk for breast cancer and those with noncancerous problems, such as breast cysts.
Outside of the office, Dr. Curcio enjoys traveling and spending time with family and friends.
