Graduating with his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Rhodes College in 1981, Dr. Grabenstein earned his medical degree from the University of Tennessee Center for Health Sciences. He then went on to complete his internship and residency in family medicine at North Carolina Baptist Hospital, where he received the Intern of the Year Award in 1986, and was Chief Resident in 1988.

As a testament of his continued education, he is board-certified in family medicine by the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM). The ABFM is a non-profit, independent medical association of American physicians who practice in family medicine and its sub-specialties.

A Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians, Dr. Grabenstein is a member of the National Board of Medical Examiners.
