An established cardiologist, Dr. Bowman is the Director of Cardiovascular Service at University Health Care System in Augusta, Georgia. By continuously responding to the needs of the community, University Health Care System has grown into one of the largest, most comprehensive health care providers in Georgia and the CSRA. University provides compassionate and skilled care through inpatient care at two hospitals, three extended care nursing facilities, home health, primary and prompt care facilities, rehabilitative care programs, and more. Dr. Bowman is a motivator and mentor to many, and always first in line to assist University Health Care System in accomplishing its mission of “improving the health of those we serve.”
Dr. Bowman devotes hours of his own time to community outreach regarding prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of cardiovascular disease and related disease processes. His passion led him to develop University’s Heart Attack & Stroke Prevention (HASP) Center, which offers genetic cardiac screening, carotid plaque scans, as well as dietary and fitness education as a way to delay or reverse heart, vascular, and related diseases. The group’s first outreach was to take its “Heart Cart” mobile screening unit to law enforcement officers, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel in University’s three-county service area. Hundreds of public servants received free screening and education, personally directed by Dr. Bowman.
Back in 2016, Dr. Bowman was selected as one of 10 Georgia Hospital Heroes by the Georgia Hospital Association. The award recognizes the very personal and powerful role that healthcare professionals play in the lives of their patients, their hospital, and the community they serve.
It was the calming hand of a family physician in rural south Georgia, inspecting the cut under the precocious 7-year-old boy’s eye from an errant horseshoe, that inspired Dr. Bowman to become a physician.
Dr. Bowman received his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia in 1977. He then went on to complete both his residency and internship at Beaumont Medical Surgical Hospital. He also completed his fellowship training in cardiovascular disease at the Brooke Army Medical Center in Texas.
Dr. Bowman is board-certified in both internal medicine and cardiovascular disease by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.
Dr. Bowman is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology (FACC). The ACC is a nonprofit medical association established in 1949. Its mission is to transform cardiovascular care and improve heart health.
Cardiology is a branch of internal medicine. A cardiologist is not the same as a cardiac surgeon. A cardiac surgeon opens the chest and performs heart surgery. A cardiologist specializes in diagnosing and treating diseases of the cardiovascular system. Dr. Bowman’s areas of interest include hypertensive heart disease, acute myocardial infarction, atherosclerosis, acute coronary syndrome, congenital heart defects, and arrhythmia treatments.
