Get to know Neonatologist Dr. Barbara K. Russell, who serves patients in the Bronx, New York.

Being a well-versed neonatologist, Dr. Russell cares for the critically ill newborn and premature infants. She is the Clinical Chief of Neonatology at the BronxCare Center for Gynecologic Care in the Bronx, New York.

BronxCare serves one of the highest risk populations in the United States, with a disproportionate share of low birth weight babies born in comparison to the national average. When considering these and the many other challenges it faces, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit’s accomplishments are clearly remarkable. In fact, its Neonatal mortality rate of 2.06 per 1,000 live births during the past five years is significantly lower than the National average of 4.14.

A member of the American Osteopathic Association, Dr. Russell has over 35 years of experience in her field. She graduated with her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from the A.T. Still University Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1985. 

Neonatology is a subspecialty of pediatrics that consists of the medical care of newborn infants, especially the ill, or premature newborns. It is a hospital-based specialty and is usually practiced in neonatal intensive care units. Neonatologists generally diagnose and treat newborns with conditions such as breathing disorders, infections, and birth defects, as well as coordinating care and medically managing newborns born prematurely, critically ill, or in need of surgery.
