Get to know Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon Dr. Eugene L. Alford, who serves patients in Houston, Texas.

Dr. Alford, “Gene”, is an award-winning, internationally recognized specialist in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery. He is the Founder & Owner of Alford Facial Plastic Surgery in Houston, Texas. 

With his extensive training and years of experience, Dr. Gene performs high quality facial reconstructive and cosmetic surgery to not only improve one’s appearance, but to restore confidence and a sense of normalcy for a wide array of patients. Utilizing cutting-edge techniques and treatments, he is supported by his highly talented staff who provide individualized care to each and every patient. 

Experienced in the latest technology and techniques for facial cosmetic and reconstructive surgery, Dr. Gene is an excellent surgeon, teacher, and mentor on the subject. He is an attending at Houston Methodist Hospital, and serves as an Associate Professor with Clinical Distinction in the Department of Plastic Surgery and Otolaryngology of Weill Cornell College of Medicine. 

His past academic appointments include Clinical Assistant Professor in the Bobby R. Alford Department of Otorhinolaryngology and Communicative Sciences at Baylor College of Medicine, Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at The Methodist Hospital (part of the Weill Cornell College of Medicine), Assistant Professor at Baylor College of Medicine, and Lecturer at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

With a well-rounded Texas education, Dr. Gene graduated with his Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Science, cum laude, from Texas A&M University. He then went on to earn his medical degree from the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine at UT Health San Antonio in 1986.

Furthering his training, he performed his internship in general surgery through the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio at Bexar County Hospital District in San Antonio. He then completed his residency within the Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, his fellowship in surgery of the facial nerve, facial reanimation, and endoscopic sinus surgery under Professor Mark May, M.D. in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and a second fellowship in the Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

With over 30+ years of experience, the doctor is double board-certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery & the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

In addition to being a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), Dr. Gene is an active member of the American Academy of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery, the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (Graduate Fellow), the American Society of Reconstructive Microsurgery, the American Medical Association,the Christian Society of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgeons, the Harris County Medical Society, the Houston Methodist Hospital Specialty Physician Group, the Houston Society of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery (President from 2000 – 2005), the Society of University Otolaryngologists, the Southwest Oncology Group, the Texas Association of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery, the Texas Medical Association, the Texas Medical Foundation, the Texas Society of Facial Plastic Surgeons, The Institute for Rehabilitation and Research (TIRR) Foundation (Vice President 2007 – present), and the Walter P. Work Society.

Facial plastic and reconstructive surgery is performed to reshape structures in the head and neck including the nose, ears, chin, cheekbones, lips, hair and neckline. Success in this field depends on the skill, training, qualifications and experience of the medical team.

A leader in the fields of cosmetic and reconstructive surgery, Dr. Gene has appeared as a guest on The Oprah Winfrey Show and Larry King Live as the leader of a facial reconstruction team for Carolyn Thomas “The Woman Without a Face.” He has also engaged in several local and regional media outlets to talk about facial plastic surgery, facial reconstructive surgery, and domestic violence.

His community efforts have included: Assistant Scoutmaster, Boy Scouts of America Troop 55; Baseball Coach, West University Little League (12 years); Board of Directors, Gulf Coast Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation; Board of Directors, Texas Institute for Rehabilitation and Research Foundation; Board of Directors, West University Little League (4 years); Elder, St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church; and Leader, Medical/Surgical Mission Trips with Micah Project in Tegucigalpa, Honduras (6 trips).
