Dr. Huguet is an award-winning general surgeon who specializes in laparoscopic surgery and is highly experienced in the treatment of disorders of the gastrointestinal tract and bariatric surgery. He is the Medical Director and Founder of the Bariatric Program at MIIS Weight Loss Institute, an affiliate of Bay Surgical Specialists in St. Petersburg, Florida.
As such, he is committed to providing compassionate high quality care to all of his patients through minimally invasive techniques. He strongly believes that bariatric surgery is one component of an entire lifestyle change for permanent weight loss, and has a multidisciplinary approach to bariatric surgery.
The doctor’s clinical interests include advanced laparoscopic surgery, bariatric surgery – weight loss surgery, pancreatic cancer and disorders, gastroesophageal reflux treatment and esophageal disorders, colon and rectal cancer and disorders, laparoscopic oncologic surgery, and laparoscopic hernia repair.
For over 10 years, Dr. Huguet has served as the Chairman of the Department of Surgery or General Surgery at St. Anthony’s Hospital. He is also affiliated with St. Petersburg General Hospital, Palms of Pasadena Hospital, Edward White Hospital, and Bayfront Health St. Petersburg.
In addition to being a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, he is a member of multiple societies, including the Society of Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, the American Society for Surgical Congress, the Florida Medical Association, and the Pinellas County Medical Association.
Born and raised in St. Petersburg, Dr. Huguet earned his medical degree from the University of South Florida College of Medicine in 2001, where he graduated at the top of his class and received the prestigious membership to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. His internship and residency in general surgery were completed at the Mayo Clinic in 2006. In addition, he completed a post-graduate fellowship in minimally invasive surgery at the Mayo Clinic in 2007 where he was granted the position of Assistant Professor of Surgery for his research efforts.
An expert in his field, he is board-certified in surgery by the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The ABS is an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge.
General surgery is a surgical specialty that focuses on abdominal contents including the esophagus, stomach, small bowel, colon, liver, pancreas, gallbladder, appendix and bile ducts, and often the thyroid gland. A general surgeon performs a wide range of abdominal surgeries for many forms of intestinal and abdominal wall neoplasms, gallbladder disease, gastric and pancreatic disease. They follow the patient through critical care and surgical recovery all the way to outpatient care.
