Dr. Nubia Lluberes, MD

Dr. Lluberes was born and raised in the Dominican Republic. She earned her Doctorate in Medicine from Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC) in Santo Domingo, graduating Magna Cum Laude, and completed an Internal Medicine Residency in the Dominican Republic.

Dr. Lluberes migrated to the U.S. to pursue her dream of becoming a Forensic Psychiatrist. She completed her Psychiatry Residency at the University of Texas-Houston Medical School and her Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, where she also pursued a Community Psychiatry Fellowship. Her commitment to continuous learning is evident in her extensive training and certifications.

Dr. Lluberes has made significant contributions in various roles, serving as an Associate MH Director at UTMB CMC, Clinical Director at Wayne Scott unit, and Medical Director for Mental Health Services at Harris County Jail/The Harris Center for MH-IDD. She is a Certified Correctional Mental Health Professional (CCHP-MH) and is recognized for her comprehensive expertise in correctional psychiatry. Her dream is to contribute to the much-needed change of the delivery of mental health services for the severely mentally ill, especially those who are under the custody of the criminal justice system.

Dr. Lluberes actively engages in research with a focus on criminal justice, forensic psychiatry, and social justice. As an accomplished educator, she holds teaching positions at multiple institutions, mentoring medical students and residents while contributing to the development of future psychiatrists. Her commitment to social justice is evident through her volunteer work with Physicians for Human Rights (PHR), providing pro-bono asylum seeker evaluations.

Dr. Lluberes’s outstanding contributions have earned her numerous accolades, including the Award for Advancing Minority Mental Health from the APA in 2016, the Byron Wilkenfeld Psychiatric Resident Scholarship, and the APA Diversity Leadership Fellowship Award.

A prolific writer and speaker, Dr. Lluberes has contributed to peer-reviewed journals, book chapters, and delivered lectures at national and international conferences. Her commitment to advancing mental health is evident in her dedication to educating both professionals and the public.
