Pertaining to his educational background, Dr. Berelowitz earned his medical degree from the Faculty of Health Sciences – University of Cape Town in South Africa in 1973. Wanting to further his education, he relocated to the United States, where he completed his residency in internal medicine at the Michael Reese Hospital and Medical Center, affiliated with the University of Chicago.

He also completed his fellowship in diabetes at the Joslin Clinic and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center at Harvard Medical School, followed by his fellowship in endocrinology, diabetes & metabolism at the Boston University Medical Center.

Endocrinology is a branch of biology and medicine dealing with the endocrine system, its diseases, and its specific secretions known as hormones. Endocrinologists have the training to diagnose and treat hormone imbalances and problems by helping to restore the normal balance of hormones in the body. The common diseases and disorders of the endocrine system that endocrinologists deal with include diabetes mellitus, as well as adrenal, pituitary, and thyroid disorders, among others.
