Get to know Urologist Dr. Michael C. Ost, who serves patients in Pennsylvania.
A top-rated urologist, Dr. Ost re-joined the Department of Urology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) in April of 2022. He previously served as the Vice Chairman of the Department and Division Chief of Pediatric Urology at the Children’s Hospital of UPMC.
In his line of work, Dr.. Ost treats the full spectrum of urologic conditions in children and adults using a variety of minimally invasive approaches — robotic-assisted surgery, laparoscopy, and endourologic techniques. He continues to specialize in treating kidney cancer, congenital renal anomalies requiring reconstruction, and complex stone disease in patients of all ages.
Holding a leadership role within the UPMC system, Dr. Ost also serves as Director of Pediatric Surgical Outreach at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. He focuses on facilitating and expanding pediatric surgical services to patients and families in distant areas of the state while uniformly coordinating this patient care across all surgical disciplines between the outlying UPMC hospitals in north and central/east-central Pennsylvania and UPMC Children’s main facility in Pittsburgh.
Teaching medical students, Dr. Ost is a Professor of Urology in the Department of Urology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, where he is also Assistant Dean for Interprofessional Education and Technology. As such, he is responsible for leading a team that actively collaborates to provide cross-disciplinary educational efforts for health care providers — medical students, residents, fellows, physicians, nurses, and others — about what each service line within the greater School of Medicine and UPMC health system entails and can offer in the realms of direct patient care, technological assets, research, and other opportunities.
The doctor’s acclaimed career in medicine began after he earned his medical degree from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York. He then completed his residency in urology at The Mount Sinai Hospital.
Furthering his education, Dr. Ost performed his fellowship in endourology at Northwell Health System — also in New York — and subsequently his fellowship in pediatric urology in Pittsburgh.
Dual-fellowship trained in endourology and pediatric urology, Dr. Ost was the first surgeon in the United States to receive this unique combined training, which allows him to treat a broad and diverse mix of pediatric and adult urology patients.
In addition to his medical training, he earned a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Michigan Stephen M. Ross School of Business.
From 2007 until 2017, Dr. Ost was with UPMC Children’s and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, where he was division chief of pediatric urology and a vice-chair in the Department of Urology. He initially joined the Division during his first tenure after completing a fellowship in pediatric urology at UPMC Children’s.
Board-certified in both urology and pediatric urology, he is a Diplomate of the American Board of Urology (ABU). The mission of the ABU is to act for the benefit of the public by establishing and maintaining standards of certification for urologists, and working with certified urologists to achieve lifelong learning to ensure the delivery of high quality, safe, and ethical urologic care.
On a professional level, Dr. Ost is an active member of the American Urological Association, the Society for Pediatric Urology, and the Endourology Society.
Urology, also known as genitourinary surgery, is the branch of medicine that focuses on surgical and medical diseases of the male and female urinary-tract system and the male reproductive organs. Urologists specialize in diseases of the urinary tract and the male reproductive system. Patients may be referred to a urologist if their physician suspects they may need treatment for a condition relating to the bladder, prostate, urethra, ureters, kidneys, and adrenal glands.
Attributing his success to his upbringing, Dr. Ost was taught early on that your success is dependent on the work you put in and your will to complete it. He knew at an early age that he wanted to be a surgeon and has always had a passion for it.
Recognized as an international speaker, Dr. Ost has also nationally published approximately 90 peer-reviewed journal articles and 35 book chapters.
