Get to know Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Reuben Gobezie, who serves patients in Beachwood, Ohio.

Orthopedic Surgeon, Dr. Gobezie, is an internationally recognized leader in the care of shoulder and sports-related injuries. He is the Founding Director and Chief of Surgery at Cleveland Shoulder Institute in Beachwood, Ohio.

The Cleveland Shoulder Institute treats patients with all types of shoulder and elbow disorders resulting from arthritis, typical wear and tear of aging, as well as traumatic and sports-related injuries. It provides both surgical and non-operative treatments. The first line of treatment is always a non-surgical approach to treating pain.

In addition to being one of the country’s top specialists in advanced arthroscopic and open surgical techniques to restore damaged joints, ligaments, and bones, Dr. Gobezie is one of the most experienced and highest volume shoulder surgeons in the country. In a typical year, he performs more than 400 shoulder replacements and 600 arthroscopic procedures. For comparison, most general orthopedic surgeons typically perform around 20 shoulder surgeries per year.

A graduate of Harvard Medical School, Dr. Gobezie completed his residency in orthopedics at the Harvard Combined Orthopedic Residency Program. He obtained subspecialty training in shoulder and elbow surgery by completing the Harvard Shoulder Fellowship.

As a part of his professional background, he has treated many athletes from colleges, universities, and high schools throughout Ohio. He was formerly a team physician for the Cleveland Gladiators, an NFL consulting physician for the Cleveland Browns, and the head team physician for Gilmour Academy. He also served as Co-Director of the Musculoskeletal Proteomics Research Group at Harvard and continues his studies in osteoarthritis and related musculoskeletal disorders through his laboratory at Case Medical Center.

In 2014, Dr. Gobezie founded Regen Orthopedics, which provides cutting-edge treatments for chronic pain. Located in Beachwood, the practice offers regenerative medicine procedures that utilize a patient’s own adult stem cells to stop pain and speed healing for a wide range of painful conditions, including arthritis.

Four years later, in 2018, Dr. Gobezie partnered with Laurence Higgins, MD, to establish PT Genie, a home-based physical therapy system. PT GENIE is a patented, interactive and avatar-based reality PT training platform. Through a simple app on a tablet, PT GENIE provides an immediate connection between healthcare provider and patient. With PT GENIE, comfortable sensors are attached to the patient while doing their PT protocol. The sensors feed data to the system that allows the patient’s doctor to review progress and provide feedback in real-time.

Among the doctor’s many achievements, he is board-certified in orthopedic surgery by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery, which is an organization with the goal of establishing educational and professional standards for orthopedic residents and surgeons, as well as evaluating the qualifications and competence of orthopedic surgeons. He is also a member of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons, the most prestigious specialty society in the United States for shoulder and elbow surgeons.

A pioneering shoulder surgeon, Dr. Gobezie developed the first cartilage transplant procedure for the shoulder performed arthroscopically. He also developed advanced new techniques for treating biceps and tendon injuries in athletes. Along with Dr. Laurent Lafosse, a world leader in arthroscopic shoulder reconstruction, he developed a minimally invasive total shoulder replacement in France. In 2015, he received the NEER Award, the most prestigious international research award in shoulder surgery.

Orthopedic surgery is the branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. Orthopedic surgeons use both surgical and nonsurgical means to treat musculoskeletal trauma, spine diseases, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors, and congenital disorders. They work in clinical and hospital settings.

A lecturer at many prominent venues nationally and around the world, Dr. Gobezie is also actively involved in significant clinical research and employs the most current arthroscopic and open surgical techniques to manage shoulder and elbow disorders. He has made pioneering contributions to the areas of shoulder replacement surgery, cartilage transplantation, and biceps surgery.

His research has been recognized with numerous national awards, including the prestigious Neer Award from American Shoulder & Elbow Surgeons, the Zimmer/Orthopedic Research and Educational Foundation Award, the Pfizer Innovative Scientific Centers for Orthopedic and Pain Management Excellence Research Award, the Arthroscopy Association of North America’s Research Grant, and the Massachusetts General Hospital Physician Scientist Award.
