  • A 12 year old with lower back pain?

Most back pain in children or adolescents is related to either structural changes or trauma. More serious causes could include inflammatory arthritis or back problems, infections and less common tumors. The evaluation should include a complete history for activity, family history, and duration of symptoms. A thorough physical examination and possibly X-rays as indicated. Most causes of back pain can be self-limiting. READ MORE

Rheumatoid arthritis is usually insidious disease with joint pain, swelling, joint deformity, and other symptoms of stiffness and fatigue. However, it can affect the cardiovascular system, reduce ability to fight infections, and really affect the renal function. One study over about 35 years showed decreased survival of 7-10 years. • Is Tramadol good for arthritis pain?

Tramadol has been looked at in osteoarthritis. While it is milder on the stomach for bleeding than nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories, it is only slightly better in some patients for pain and overall has no major advantages. It is a medication that has opioid properties. More patients have side effects and discontinue the medication than with acetaminophen. READ MORE

Occasionally, chemotherapeutic drugs are used with lupus to control some of the autoimmune abnormalities. There are rare forms of lung disease which are more common in some lupus patients, but most often occur in smokers, just like in non-lupus patients. READ MORE

  • I have a sudden pain and swelling around my right wrist. Is it due to rheumatoid arthritis?

An acute, inflammatory condition at the wrist may suggest arthritis, tendonitis, infection, or another condition. • How can rheumatoid arthritis be managed?

Drugs that only control pain do not stop the damage done to the joints and other body systems by the inflammation of rheumatoid arthritis. Most patients with active rheumatoid arthritis need to be on disease modifying drugs or combinations that might include biologic agents. The sooner the inflammation Is under control, the better the long-term outcome may be. Patients with active Rheumatoid arthritis should seek advice from their physician or a rheumatologist READ MORE

  • I have a severe pain in my joints post my delivery. What could be the cause for this?

Many women may have pain after delivery. Sometimes this is due to the change in weight and relaxing of body structures with hormonal changes of pregnancy. The pain could also be due to arthritis or chronic pain of some other nature and if present for more than several weeks, it should be evaluated by someone who can diagnose and treat joint problems. • What are the deformities that can be detected by an Anomaly scan?

An Anomaly Scan is usually done about the 18th or 20th weeks of her pregnancy. This ultrasound can detect such things as major deformities of the limbs, hands or feet. Also it checks for major spinal development. It can detect cleft palate, the presence of kidneys that are functioning, it's a look at the abdominal organs, and check for some brain deformities, you can also check for a low-lying position of the placenta. This clearly would not completely rule out the possibilities of other problems. READ MORE

  • My sister is suffering from sacroiliitis. Will it affect her chances of getting pregnant?

There are several possible causes for sacroiliitis. When associated with ankylosing spondylitis, fertility does not seem to be greatly affected, but it may affect other parts of the process. The sacroiliac joints naturally loosen during pregnancy, so symptoms may either increase, decrease, or stay the same. Up to 60% of women with forcing spondylitis flare within six months of delivery. Likewise, women with spondylitis are more frequently delivered by cesarean section. READ MORE
