Get to know Orthodontist Dr. Christopher A. Murphy, who serves patients in Scarborough, Maine.

Dr. Murphy is a board-certified orthodontist, an honor achieved by less than half of all practicing orthodontists. His aim is to provide his patients with personalized, effective treatment options in a friendly, fun, and supportive environment. He specializes in early interceptive, adolescent and adult orthodontic treatment.

Currently, he is in practice with Southern Maine Orthodontics in Scarborough, Maine. There, he and Dr. Lisa Howard combine new technology with a commitment to quality and patient comfort. They strive to make each patient’s orthodontic experience both pleasant and rewarding. Their goal is to provide the highest quality orthodontic treatment for all of their patients, with a personal touch, in a supportive and caring environment. 

A lifelong New Englander, Dr. Murphy was born and raised in Plymouth, Massachusetts and is proud to call Maine home. He graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the Liberal Arts Honors Program at Providence College. He then went on to earn his Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry degree from the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine and continued his specialty training in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics at the University of Connecticut, where he completed his Master of Dental Science degree in 2013.    

As a dental student and resident, Dr. Murphy received numerous awards for his academic achievement, clinical excellence, and community involvement, including the American Association of Orthodontics Charley Schultz Resident Award, the American Association of Orthodontics Orofacial Complex Award, the American College of Dentists Award, the Allen B. Reiskin Award, the Pierre Fauchard Award, and the American Dental Association Dental Student Award.

In addition to being a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics, he remains a member of numerous professional organizations, including the American Association of Orthodontics, the Northeast Society of Orthodontists, the American Dental Association, the Omicron Kappa Upsilon National Dental Honor Society, the Sigma Xi Research Society, the Maine Dental Association, the Greater Portland Dental Society, and the York County Dental Society.

As an expert in his field, Dr. Murphy has spoken at numerous national conferences. He has also had several articles published related to accelerating tooth movement, decreasing orthodontic treatment times, and the role of biomechanics in orthodontic therapy.

Orthodontics is a specialty of dentistry that deals with the diagnosis, prevention, and correction of malpositioned teeth and jaws. As an orthodontist, Dr. Murphy is responsible for identifying problems with the positioning of a patient’s teeth and with their oral development. He utilizes the most advanced procedures and equipment available to ensure that every patient achieves a healthy and beautiful smile.

When he is not treating patients, he enjoys spending time with family and friends. Regardless of the weather, he loves to be outside surfing, snowboarding, and hiking. He is a New England sports fan through and through!
