Why do I have a pain in my knee every time i bend it?
It sounds like you might have an overuse injury as you do long distance a lot. You might want to look at your running shoes to see if they're right for you, also make sure you do some cross-training to keep your muscles ready for the unexpected with different terrains and make sure you are stretching your calves and strengthen your glutes and quads. My shoulder hurts when I raise my arm. What should I do?
There could be a number of different issues from impingement syndrome to rotator cuff tear. The best thing to do is to go see a physical therapist to test your movements and screen any tears or pathologies to get a better idea of what is going on. If you just let it go, the shoulder will continue to get worse because there is inherently a lot of instability at the shoulder and most likely pushing through is making it worse. READ MORE
My knees are cracking all the time - Do I need PT?
Does it hurt when your knees crack? The cracking could be something called crepitus in the joints but might not be something to worry about. If pain coincides with the cracking, or there is pain before or after, I would go see a PT. READ MORE
How can physical therapy benefit my son?
Physical therapy can definitely help. Physical therapy is not just for people that are in pain; it is to optimize your movement for healthier lifestyle and better quality of life. All PTs aren't made the same, however, and I would suggest going to a board-certified specialist in orthopedics that might also have a strength and conditioning or sports/performance certification. You can even ask about injury prevention screenings or something of that nature instead of a traditional physical therapy session. READ MORE

I have a strain in my back after playing hockey. Should I try warm water therapy to ease it?
You can try taking soaking baths and hot showers but it will really only be a short term effect if any. Low back pain and arthritic joint pain are apples to oranges. You should make sure you go to physical therapy with a manual therapist that will mobilize and manipulate your back in addition to giving you the appropriate exercise to strengthen the muscles that are not pulling their weight. Is a physical therapy session required for a pulled muscle?
I would go into PT right away because they can work on the soft-tissues to help them heal quicker, but then also strengthen your core and other muscles to help you get back to 100% quicker. Rest is not the way to recover from a pulled muscle, but neither is pushing through it, so have your therapist help you early on before it becomes a more complicated issue. READ MORE
How long should physical therapy last for shin splints?
That is a loaded question and it depends.... If you are a runner or athlete and do not wish to take a break while recovering then it will take longer but still can recover. I would suggest swimming or biking for exercise if you can while you go through therapy and then make sure to do your home exercises, as they will help speed your recovery. The general answer is about 6 weeks or so. READ MORE
