    WHERE in Hawaii? You will probably have to get her to the doctor yourself for a full evaluation. Try for a clinic associated with the medical school (especially if she’s on Oahu); one thing that worked for my mother was asking ER nurses to recommend a good internist or family doc (yes, you can walk into the ER without her and ER nurses have LOTS of opinions).   • Do I have a swollen liver?

    If I asked one of my professors he would recommend “tincture of time”. You probably have acute alcoholic hepatitis and have started on the best treatment. While I would like some blood tests today and again in two weeks (and an ultrasound as well), your odds are pretty good as long as you stay away from alcohol. PLEASE do not poke your liver since it’s vulnerable to injury right now. Feel free to check in here in about two weeks to report on how you’re doing. READ MORE

  • How do I know if I need to go to the doctor?

    Long &deep, go to ER; if it’s less than an inch long wash it well and apply a good tight Band-Aid. READ MORE

  • Erectile dysfunction?

    You can get a family doctor to verify that the problem is not physical; if not, you may need a sex therapist. A clinical psychologist might be able to refer you. If you have been using porn that could be part of the problem. READ MORE

  • About HIV transmission?

    I used to share ice cream cones with my best friend when he had AIDS. Soap is not dangerous unless both of you are bleeding. Getting the virus requires exchange of sexual fluids or blood. READ MORE

    Have them try the right arm next time, and if they can’t use that one you can ask for an RN (who may be more practiced than the barely-trained folks at the blood bank. Of course you have other veins; the problem is that the one in front of your elbow is supported by other tissues so that it won’t collapse when fluid is removed READ MORE

  • How long will it take my nephew to recover from a coma?

    Depends whether the coma was induced by the doctors to make it easier to take care of him or whether it is from bleeding or oxygen deprivation. Being that young gives him a huge advantage. READ MORE

    Your family doctor might be able to open and drain it, but I would call first. Urgent care would be my other recommendation. If you can wait until tomorrow and sit on a heating pad overnight you should get there when they open. READ MORE

    I would wait a couple more days UNLESS you run a fever or have redness or tenferness going up towards the knee. Then go to a hospital ER. READ MORE

  • Normal or not following surgery?

    There should be both a surgeon and a gastroenterologist on the case. Ask the one who did NOT do the ERCP wht s/he thinks READ MORE

  • Blood oyxgen?

    68% of your hemoglobin is oxygenated, and since your hemoglobin is probably at least 14, you should be getting what you need. If this is a big change or you are feeling worse, call your doctor to ask if you should take your breathing treatments more often or take more meds, such as steroids. Try to favor urgent care clinics over ERs, even the freestanding ones. READ MORE

  • Reoccurring cramps that have been happening multiple years?

    Muscle cramps go away fastest if you stretch the muscle—works for foot and calf cramps too. The quicker you abort a cramp, the less likely that the muscle will build up lactic acid that can cause irritation, leading to repeated cramps.
