Get to know General Surgeon Dr. Kara Villareal, who serves patients in Glendale, Arizona.

Dr. Villareal is a board-certified general surgeon who is currently serving patients at Arizona Preferred Surgeons in Glendale, Arizona. Arizona Preferred Surgeons has provided premier general and colorectal surgery to Valley residents and visitors since 1991. The team of board-certified surgeons bring more than 30 years of surgical experience and believe in personalized care. 

Dr. Villareal earned her medical degree from the University of Arizona College of Medicine in Tucson, Arizona in 1997. She then went on to complete her residency in general surgery at the same university. Dr. Villareal is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS). She is also an Associate of the Maricopa County Medical Society, the Phoenix Surgical Society, and the Arizona Medical Association.

Dr. Villareal is board-certified in surgery by the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The ABS is an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge. 

General surgery is a surgical specialty that focuses on abdominal contents including esophagus, stomach, small bowel, colon, liver, pancreas, gallbladder, appendix and bile ducts, and often the thyroid gland. A general surgeon performs a wide range of abdominal surgeries for many forms of intestinal and abdominal wall neoplasms, gallbladder disease, gastric and pancreatic disease. They follow the patient through critical care and surgical recovery all the way to outpatient care. Dr. Villareal’s specialty areas include general surgery, minimally invasive surgery, colorectal surgery, breast surgery, endocrine surgery, robotic surgery (including single incision gallbladder surgery), as well as upper intestinal endoscopy and colonoscopy.
