Dr. Villareal earned her medical degree from the University of Arizona College of Medicine in Tucson, Arizona in 1997. She then went on to complete her residency in general surgery at the same university. Dr. Villareal is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS). She is also an Associate of the Maricopa County Medical Society, the Phoenix Surgical Society, and the Arizona Medical Association.

Dr. Villareal is board-certified in surgery by the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The ABS is an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge.
