What is the difference between a therapist and psychologist?
Hello and thank you for your question. A therapist is a mental health specialist who treats mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, and other issues that seriously impact a person's daily functioning. He or she may not necessarily be a psychologist. The term is often used interchangeably, but they may have different orientations. A psychologist is also a specialist in mental health, but has additional training in using a wide range of psychological tests to confirm a diagnosis. There are many specialties within the field of psychology (i.e., school psychologists, clinical psychologists, neuropsychologists, etc.). Be sure to ask for the therapist's professional orientation to be sure that it is right for you. READ MORE
What are the basic strategies for managing stress?
Hello and thanks for your question. To be clear not all stress is necessarily bad and in some cases it is needed to help us perform better. Eustress is the kind of stress that is helpful and allows us to perform better at school, home or in our communities. Distress, often called toxic stress is the kind that can raise blood pressure, cause excess anxiety and disturb sleep and eating patterns. The following may be helpful in helping managing toxic stress in your life. At the top of my list is forgiving others who have wronged us. Don't allow negative thoughts to overwhelm you particularly during the COVID 19 pandemic when many of of us have so much time to think, Change negative thoughts into positive ones by thinking good things about yourself. Concentrate on your strengths and say learn to say NO to people who are toxic stress bearers. READ MORE
What is talk therapy used for?
Hello and thank you for your question. Talk therapy is a session where you meet once or twice a week with your therapist whose orientation is basically the psychodynamic or client-centered approach. The goal of the former is that subconscious feelings of past traumatic events have been suppressed. These negative memories are now playing out in the conscious mind through the manifestation of anxiety or depression. The goal is to allow the patient to talk through "free floating" and reach a cartharsis that enables subconscious thoughts to be brought to awareness. It is surmised that the cathartic experience will lead to a reduction or elimination of psychological problems. The latter is where the therapist uses emphatic listening skills by allowing the patient to openly share negative experiences and gain insight into how to overcome them and become mentally healthy. The focus is on the client, thus the name "client-centered." READ MORE
