Holding a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Dr. Kurz Jr. earned his medical degree from the University of Missouri, Columbia in 1994. He completed his residency in internal medicine and pediatrics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1997.

Passionate about his profession, he is board-certified in internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world. 

In addition, he is board-certified in pediatrics by the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP). The mission of the ABP is to advance child health by certifying pediatricians who meet standards of excellence and are committed to continuous learning and improvement.

Alongside his clinical role, Dr. Kurz Jr. serves as a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine.
