An internationally recognized expert in diseases and surgery of the macula, retina, and vitreous, Dr. Adelman is affiliated with the Yale Eye Center. His clinical interests include macular holes and puckers, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, complex retinal detachment, retinal vein occlusion, retinal laser, and surgery. 

The Yale Eye Center strives to provide the highest level of clinical care to patients, to develop new treatments for blinding eye diseases through research, and to train the next generation of physicians and scientists. It is staffed with highly skilled ophthalmologists who provide a complete range of services in cornea and external disease, glaucoma, retinal diseases, pediatric ophthalmology, neuro ophthalmology, and related disorders.

In addition to his clinical practice, he is a Professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences and Director of the Retina and Macula Service at the Yale School of Medicine.

A graduate of the Tehran University of Medical Sciences School of Medicine in 1987, Dr. Adelman continued his education by earning his Master of Public Health degree from the University of California at Berkeley. He then went on to complete his residency in general surgery at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, followed by a residency in ophthalmology and a retina fellowship at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary of Harvard Medical School. He also holds a Master of Business Administration degree in leadership in healthcare from the Yale School of Management.

A Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), he is the Scientific Director of European Vitreo-Retinal Society, and the President-Elect of Connecticut State Medical Society. He has served as president of the Connecticut Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons, president of the New Haven County Medical Association, and has been an invited faculty in 15 countries including Germany, Italy, Australia, Spain, Mexico, and Canada.

At the forefront of new advancements in macular and retinal diseases, Dr. Adelman has been Principal Investigator of numerous clinical trials. He has published extensively, primarily in the area of retinal and macular diseases and surgery, with over 160 publications and 300 abstracts. He serves on the editorial board of the American Journal of Ophthalmology and several other scientific journals, and on the Executive Committees of several medical societies.    

Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine and surgery, which deals with the diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders. Ophthalmologists are experts in the diseases, functions, and anatomy of the eye. They may provide routine care such as vision testing, as well as prescribe and fit eyeglasses or contact lenses. However, ophthalmologists are also surgeons. They repair traumatic injuries to the eye and perform cataract, glaucoma, and corneal surgery.

As a testament of his expertise in the field of ophthalmology, Dr. Adelman has received the “Senior Honor Award” of the American Society of Retina Specialists, the “Senior Achievement Award” of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the “M Bruce Shields Teaching Award,” and multiple leadership awards. He has been recognized by the Lions of Connecticut as Knight of the Blind for “outstanding work throughout the state and in the global community.”
