Sure looks like a hernia. Get her checked. READ MORE

  • Bleeding/loss of blood?

She could be in trouble. If she is drinking excessive amounts of alcohol and reluctant to go to a hospital because she is worried about withdrawal, she could have liver disease. People with liver disease can have bleeding from the gut which may show up as blood from the butt or throw up blood so much that they die from it. Alcohol withdrawal can be treated in the hospital; easily and then she should go to detox center to get back to normal. READ MORE

  • Blood after bowel movement?

May be a simple thing like hemorrhoids.Get a colonoscopy if you have not had one in the last few years. READ MORE

  • What do I do?

Is this a new problem, or is it something you have always had? If it is new, we worry about a blockage. If it is longstanding, it would suggest a "lazy colon" or a type of irritable bowel syndrome with predominant constipation. Are you older than 45? If so, you would be a candidate for a colonoscopy. You are probably passing mucus and not pus. Try a gentle laxative such as miralax (available without a prescription). Physical activity, fiber in diet, and drinking enough fluids will help in the long run. If the problem persists, you should see your doctor. There are medications to help this problem once an obstruction has been ruled out. READ MORE

  • Bump on the ridge of my rectum?

  • What causes diarrhea immediately after eating?

We all have a reflex called gastrocolic reflex, which prompts the rectum to empty when food arrives in the stomach. If you are otherwise healthy, what you are experiencing may be within the spectrum of "normal." It may also be a symptom of Irritable bowel syndrome, which is very common. Some more serious conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease need to be considered. If it just started within the last few weeks, a bowel infection is a distinct possibility. Please consult your PCP regarding simple stool tests to eliminate more serious conditions. READ MORE

  • Why does old gastro test indicate allergies?

This is suggestive of a common problem called eosinophilic esophagitis. A typical symptom is difficulty swallowing food. You may also feel pain when swallowing and heartburn. It can be treated with acid blockers and some allergy medications, which are available as suspensions to be swallowed. READ MORE

  • Can a colonoscopy be done without anesthesia?

Yes. That is becoming less common, but I have done quite a few. READ MORE

  • What causes colon cancer?

I suspect that it is a genetic problem. There are multiple genetic abnormalities that can result in colon cancer at a young age. A common one is called Lynch syndrome. READ MORE
