How are children usually given anesthesia?
In children, you perform what is called 'inhalational anesthesia'. The meaning of that is you put the child to sleep with anesthetic gases before you place an iv. With that, your son will no have the bad experience to get an iv. because he will be asleep when that happens. READ MORE
What decides the medication before my surgery?
In general every person is a bit apprehensive ahead of surgical procedures. That is the reason why ahead of general anesthesia most of the anesthesiologists will give some Midazolam. If the procedure is very short your provider may opt out to avoid that you are sleepy to long. READ MORE
Is plavix( clopidogrel ) a blood thinner?
Plavix is not a 'blood thinner' but a platelet inhibitor. You will need to stop the medication at least 10 days before the surgery. However you should check with your cardiologist first and should have had a cardiac clearance. Following the surgery you can restart the medication in general 48 hours after the procedure. Some surgeon prefer you to be off Plavix a bit longer. Check with your provider. READ MORE
Is laughing gas ok for someone with anxiety?
There is no contraindication to use Nitrous Oxide in patients with anxiety. No evidence exists that the inhalational gas will make anxiety worse. READ MORE
Is anesthesia safe for older people with dementia?
There is some evidence that general anesthesia will make dementia worse. If it is a minor dental procedure I would suggest not to use general anesthesia but just local anesthesia. READ MORE

Do I have to stop taking my vitamins before anesthesia?
These medications are save to take before general endotracheal anesthesia. However keep in mind in general to stop eating and drinking after midnight the night before surgery! READ MORE
Am I really paralyzed under general anesthesia?
As a general rule you do use a palalytic agent when you put the patient asleep. You do this in order to avoid laryngeal spasms, which are spastic reactions of a part of your breathing tract when using inhalational gases and/or during the placement of the breathing tube. Further during the surgery your body may have muscular contractions which can interfere with the surgery itself. Paralysation will avoid that. READ MORE
Sickness after anesthesia?
Sickness after anesthesia is quite common. People who have usually motion sickness are at increased risk. You want to let your anesthesia provider know about that.
