Get to know Urologist Dr. Maude Carmel, who serves patients in Dallas, Texas.

An excellent urologist, Dr. Carmel specializes in female urology, pelvic floor reconstructive surgery, pelvic organ prolapse, incontinence, and voiding dysfunction. She is a member of the Female Urology team in UT Southwestern Medical Center’s Department of Urology. 

As such, she performs all types of related surgeries – vaginal, robotically assisted, and abdominal. She is also able to treat complex cases such as patients with recurrent problems, failed previous repairs, and complications from previous treatments, including those from transvaginal mesh.

Because each person’s issues, anatomy, and treatment goals are unique, Dr. Carmel says she strives to educate patients about their options and lets them decide which option fits them best. “I really try to personalize patient care, to talk with each patient and explain the different approaches, and to discuss the best options for them, their problem, and their lifestyle. At the end of the day, I want to provide the treatments that patients feel are best for them.”

In addition to her clinical practice, she is an Associate Professor in the Department of Urology, and has been the Program Director of the Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship since 2019.

Academically, Dr. Carmel earned her medical degree from Université de Sherbrooke, Quebec in Canada. She completed her residency in urology at both Université de Sherbrooke and McGill University. She then pursued her fellowship in female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio.

A Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada, the doctor is board-certified in both urology & female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery by the American Board of Urology (ABU). The mission of the ABU is to act for the benefit of the public by establishing and maintaining standards of certification for urologists, and working with certified urologists to achieve lifelong learning to ensure the delivery of high quality, safe, and ethical urologic care.

On a professional level, Dr. Carmel is an active member of the American Urological Association, the Society of Urodynamics, Female Pelvic Medicine & Urogenital Reconstruction, the South Central Section of American Urological Association, the American Medical Association, the Texas Medical Association, and the Dallas County Medical Association.

Her research interests include robotic surgeries for pelvic organ prolapse, stress urinary incontinence surgeries, treatment of vaginal mesh complications, resident medical education, and surgical techniques for vesico-vaginal fistula repairs.

Urology, also known as genitourinary surgery, is the branch of medicine that focuses on surgical and medical diseases of the male and female urinary-tract system and the male reproductive organs. Urologists specialize in diseases of the urinary tract and the male reproductive system. Patients may be referred to a urologist if their physician suspects they may need treatment for a condition relating to the bladder, prostate, urethra, ureters, kidneys, and adrenal glands.

A recipient of the Frank McGill Travel Fellowship Award in 2011, Dr. Carmel was selected by her peers to Texas Monthly’s Super Doctors list for 2014 and 2015 and to the Texas Rising Stars list for three consecutive years (2015-2017). She also received a Fellowship Scholarship and 1st Place in Clinical Research Presentation from the Quebec Urological Association in 2012.
