A 1999 graduate of the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. Harkins completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at St. Luke’s Des Peres Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri in 2004. The following year, he completed his fellowship in shoulder and elbow surgery at the W.B. Carrell Memorial Clinic/ Baylor University Hospital in Dallas, Texas.
Following his education, he became board-certified in orthopedic surgery by the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery, which is an organization that provides board certification to qualified Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine who specialize in the use of surgery to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.
Currently, Dr. Harkins serves on the Continuing Medical Education Planning Committee for the American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics (AOAO), of which is a Fellow. From 2017 until 2018, he served as President of the Shoulder and Elbow Section of the AOAO.
Orthopedic surgery is the branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. Orthopedic surgeons use both surgical and nonsurgical means to treat musculoskeletal trauma, spine diseases, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors, and congenital disorders. On a more personal note, Dr. Harkins and his wife, Jill, have four children. In his free time, he attempts to keep up with all four of his children’s activities and sports. The family attends First Baptist of Monroe where he and his wife teach the Young Marrieds’ class. as well as support JH Outback, a Christian retreat/camp.
