Get to know Hospice and Palliative Medicine Specialist Dr. Marcela Scaccia, who serves patients throughout the State of Florida.
An experienced hospice and palliative medicine specialist, Dr. Scaccia is the Medical Director for VITAS Healthcare in Volusia, Flagler and Putnam counties, Florida.
Back in 1995, she earned her medical degree from the Sapienza University of Rome in Italy after completing her first year of medical school at New York Medical College. She then went on to complete her residency in family medicine at St Luke’s University Hospital in 2006, before completing her fellowship in hospice and palliative medicine at the New York University Medical Center in 2007.
Recognized as a Fellow of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (FAAHPM), the doctor is board-certified in hospice and palliative medicine, geriatric medicine, and family medicine by the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM). The ABFM is a non-profit, independent medical association of American physicians who practice family medicine and its sub-specialties.
Hospice and palliative medicine is a formal subspecialty of medicine in the United States that focuses on symptom management, relief of suffering, and end-of-life care. Hospice and palliative medicine specialists are medical doctors who help prevent and relieve suffering of patients who have a serious illness or who have only a short time left to live. Outside of the office, Dr. Scaccia enjoys swimming, kayaking, golf, and traveling. She is fluent in multiple languages, including English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, and Italian.
