Get to know Phlebologist Dr. Alex Afshar, who serves patients in Connecticut.

Dr. Afshar is a board-certified physician with expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of varicose veins, spider veins, hemorrhoids, and other types of vein disease. He practices at the Vein Institute of Connecticut, located in Newtown, Fairfield, and Westport, Shelton and Avon, Connecticut. 

Vein Institute of Connecticut is dedicated to treating vein disease using the safest and most innovative treatments. At the forefront of minimally invasive surgery, Dr. Afshar offers the latest in surgical techniques by blending medical knowledge with superior surgical skills to offer his patients the most comprehensive care in a professional and comfortable environment. 

His extensive training includes research and clinical positions affiliated with some of the world’s greatest medical institutions, including the National Institute of Health, National Cancer Institute, Columbia University, and New York College of Medicine.

After completing his Bachelor of Science Degree at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. and Sheffield University in the United Kingdom, he went on to earn his Medical Degree.  Thereafter, he completed his residency at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons Stamford Hospital. 

In order to stay up to date in his field, the doctor remains a member of the American Vein & Lymphatic Society, the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery, the American Academy of Family Physicians, and the American Medical Association. He is also board-certified by the American Board of Family Medicine, a non-profit, independent medical association of American physicians who practice in family medicine and its sub-specialties.

Phlebology is the study of veins in the human body and the diseases that affect them throughout one’s lifetime. A phlebologist is a medical specialist in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of venous origin. They are trained to expertly diagnose, treat, and where possible, prevent any form of venous disease, whether it be varicose veins, clotting disorders, vascular birthmarks, or leg ulcers.

In his spare time, Dr. Afshar enjoys reading, motocross racing, wakeboarding, and gardening. He has a good working knowledge of Spanish.
