Gum Disease●It Is Not Just Your Teeth●Your Entire Body May Be Affected
Gum disease affects our gums and teeth. I am not sure that patients really understand why flossing and brushing has to be done every day. Every day plaque, a sticky whitish mass of living bacteria forms at our gum line and on our teeth. Whether we eat or not, plaque forms. We may see plaque on our...
Floss and Brush Your Teeth as If Your Life Depended on it. Because It Does
The quality of the lives we'll have when we get older depends on the home care we are doing or not doing right now.Our mouths perform complex services for us. How do I make my Invisalign less sharp?
I am sorry you have this problem. Go back to your dentist and he/she will have a staff person smooth down the sharp or rough edges. The appliance may have been dropped. Sharpened edges make your mouth sore. When you are cleaning your appliance make sure you have a washcloth lining the washbasin so you don't chip the appliance if you drop it. READ MORE
Do dentures make your breath smell?
Our mouths perform many functions for us. One of the most important functions is we need our mouths to eat. Whether you have your natural teeth or not, placing food in our mouths and chewing to make the food particles smaller so you can swallow and your body can digest it, requires all of us to clean our mouths every day. Imagine a refrigerator full of food. If food placed in the refrigerator for along period, eventually spoils and smells. Imagine pulling out the plug. In a warm refrigerator, the food will decompose quickly, and in a short time, when you open that warm "fridge," you will be greeted with a foul odor. If we all thought our mouths are like "warm refrigerators" that need to be cleaned daily! Dentures or natural teeth, we need to clean our teeth daily. Natural teeth require flossing teeth and brushing correctly. Dentures require that you remove your dentures and gently brush the outside (teeth and pallet), and the tissue side of the upper and lower dentures. You can soak your dentures in a tablet solution overnight. While your dentures are soaking, wash your hands, and with your fingers, massage your gum tissue all around your mouth. Rinse your mouth with 1/2 tsp. salt to a 6-8 oz. glass of water. If you are worried about denture odor, you can take a plastic cup with you, salt packs are available at fast food restaurants, you can remove and rinse your dentures and mouth with salt water. (after eating, coffee break). Dentures should be removed for at least 4 hours per day. Keeping your dentures in your mouth for long periods of time is compared to going to bed with your shoes on. If you soak your dentures overnight, the solution, water, should be changed every day. Particles that you see at the bottom of your container are rotting food. Don't forget to clean your tongue. You buy a tongue cleaner or take a teaspoon, with the round side facing your pallet, place the spoon on your tongue as far back on your tongue with out gagging. GENTLY press the tsp on your tongue and scrape as you move the spoon out of your mouth. You will see a whitish slimy mass. That mass is bacteria, food particles hiding out in the nooks and crannies of your tongue. Remember you are massaging and cleaning (not RAKING LEAVES) your mouth tissues! READ MORE
Do crowns on front teeth look natural?
HOW SOMETHING LOOKS TO ANYONE IS IN THE EYES OF THE BEHOLDER. A NATURAL TOOTH WITH NO REPAIR WORK DONE REFLECTS, REFRACTS DIFFERENTLY. IT IS HARD TO FABRICATE CROWNS AND BRIDGES AND TOOTH RE-REPLACEMENT AND SHINE NATURAL LIGHT ON THESE TEETH DURING A "TRY IN." CHOOSING A SHADE TO SELECT A TOOTH COLOR RESTORATION IS DIFFICULT. SOME DENTISTS ARE SO GOOD AT SELECTING SHADES FOR TOOTH STRUCTURE REPLACEMENT THAT THEY CAN MATCH PEARLS. YOU WANT A TOOTH SHADE THAT WILL BLEND WITH YOUR TOOTH SHADE OF THE TOOTH BEING REPAIRED AND WITH THE TEETH ADJACENT TO THE TOOTH. REMEMBER ONE TOOTH WITH 4-5 DIFFERENT SHADES ON THE SAME TOOTH. DENTAL MATERIALS ARE IMPROVING ALL THE TIME. DENTISTRY IS AN ART, WHEN YOU CHOOSE A DENTIST, YOU HAVE TO KEEP THIS IN MIND! READ MORE
Can tartar buildup on dentures?
Tarter does build up on dentures. Tarter is hardened plaque. Many people do not take care of their dentures. You should remove your dentures. You should be cleaning, brushing the outside surface of your dentures, and brushing (not raking) the tissue side. If you are using denture tablets, follow the directions on the package. If you see particles of debris on the bottom of your denture case, that is garbage. You want to dump the liquid out, rinse out the case, and let it air dry. Do not soak your dentures in bleach. The pink acrylic may turn white! Do not use PEROXIDE to soak your dentures - it may make your dentures rough. Your mouth is very sensitive. READ MORE
When should I see a dentist for wisdom teeth pain?
If you see your dentist regularly, you may have been told you will need to have your wisdom out. You may not have room for them. ONLY ONE PERSON IN 25 WILL HAVE ROOM FOR THEM. What happens if antibiotics don't work for tooth infection?
TAKING ANTIBIOTICS FOR AN INFECTION SOMETIMES IS A NECESSITY. THE PROBLEM IS MOST PEOPLE HAVE THEIR OWN IDEAS HOW THEY WILL TAKE THEIR ANTIBIOTICS. SOME PATIENTS WILL TAKE ONE OR TWO DOSES AND STOP. IF A PATIENT IS GIVEN AN ANTIBIOTIC AND PAIN MEDICINE, PATIENTS WILL TAKE THE PAIN MEDS AND SKIP THE ANTIBIOTICS, THEN SAY THE PAIN MEDICINE DOESN'T WORK. IF YOU ARE GIVEN ANTIBIOTICS, TAKE THE ANTIBIOTICS FOR THE LENGTH OF TIME YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO. EVEN IF YOU THINK THE INFECTION IS BETTER, SOME OF THE BACTERIA MAY STILL BE PRESENT AND THE INFECTION WILL START INCREASING IF YOU STOP. IF IT IS THOUGHT THAT THE INFECTION IS STILL PRESENT, YOU MAY BE GIVEN THE SAME ANTIBIOTIC FOR ANOTHER COURSE OF TREATMENT OR YOU MAY BE GIVEN A DIFFERENT KIND OF ANTIBIOTIC. READ MORE
Do interdental brushes cause black triangles?
Instead of the interdental brushes, flossing may be better. You take the floss and you want to clean that tooth. You put the floss between your teeth. You want a thicker floss. What you should be doing is going down along the side of your tooth and slide the floss up and down removing the debris. Do not go across the pink tissue. Move the floss to the next tooth. Lift the floss up, not touching the pink gum tissue and put the floss on the next tooth. You are cleaning the tooth surface. You floss up and down on the tooth surface. The pink, pointed tissue between your teeth is precious. When you are finished flossing, take a soft toothbrush and, starting behind the last tooth in your mouth, brush back and forth, GENTLY, you go all around the arch until you get behind the last tooth in the opposite side of your arch, then you brush the gum back and forth where your tongue or palate is located. You brush gum line, mid-tooth, and then occlusal tops of your teeth. You don't want to put the floss in the middle of that point. You want to get the inflammation out. YOU TREAT THIS PRECIOUS TOOTH AREA CAREFULLY. RINSE YOUR MOUTH WITH WARM SALT WATER. ONE HALF TEASPOON OF SALT TO 8 OZ. WARM WATER. READ MORE

How do you brush your teeth with your jaw wired shut?
A WIRED JAW WILL MAKE ORAL HYGIENE DIFFICULT. MOST OF YOUR FOOD INTAKE WILL BE IN LIQUID FORM. YOU CAN TRY A CHILD'S SOFT TOOTHBRUSH. YOU START BEHIND THE LAST TOOTH IN A LOWER OR UPPER CORNER OF YOUR MONTH. GENTLY START AT THE GUM LINE AND BRUSH BACK AND FORTH. GO ALL AROUND TO THE OPPOSITE SIDE. RIGHT NOW, YOU CAN ONLY DO THE OUTSIDE CHEEK SIDE. WHEN THE WIRES ARE GONE, YOU WILL BRUSH BEHIND THE LAST TOOTH AND DO THE GUM LINE BACK AND FORTH WHERE YOUR PALATE AND TONGUE ARE. YOU WILL BRUSH THE GUM LINE AREA, AND THE UPPER SIDES AND THE LOWER SIDES OF YOUR TEETH. YOUR UPPER AND LOWER TEETH ARE WIRED AND YOU WANT TO BRUSH THE TEETH YOU CAN. WHEN YOUR WIRES COME OFF, YOU WILL WANT TO FLOSS. YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO USE THOSE FLOSSERS THAT A PIECE OF FLOSS IS STRETCHED A CROSS. THERE ARE THIN, SMALL STICKS THAT HAVE LITTLE BRUSHES ON THEM. WHEN YOU PLACE THE STICK BETWEEN TWO TEETH, YOU GENTLY CLEAN THE BACK OF ONE TOOTH AND THE FRONT OF THE TOOTH IN BACK. USING A TOOTH IRRIGATOR FROM THE BACK OF ONE ARCH AND GOING AROUND THE GUM LINE TO THE OTHER SIDE MAY BE AN EXPERIENCE OF A CLEAN MOUTH YOU MAY WANT TO CONTINUE. RINSING WITH WARM SALT WATER IS SOOTHING TO YOUR MOUTH TISSUES. ONE HALF TEASPOON OF SALT TO AN 8 OZ. GLASS OF WARM WATER. I DO NOT KNOW IF YOU HAVE ANY MISSING TEETH WHERE YOU CAN REACH INSIDE THE PALATE OR TONGUE TEETH AREAS. WATCH YOUR JUNK FOOD INTAKE. AFTER EATING, IT MAY BE A GOOD IDEA TO RINSE YOUR MOUTH WITH SOME WARM SALT WATER. SOME WATER IRRIGATORS ARE ADVERTISED AS BEING FLOSSERS. FINGER FLOSSING, BRUSHING, TONGUE CLEANING, AND WATER IRRIGATORS PROVIDE THE CADILLAC OF MOUTH CARE. READ MORE
What does deep cleaning teeth involve?
You are at the perfect age to really keep your teeth. Plaque forms every day. If plaque is not removed with correct and brushing, it will crystallize in 24 to 48 hours. Once plaque is crystallized, it can only be removed with dental instruments. Crystallized plaque, rotting tiny food particles, living bacteria, dead bacteria, toxins harden we call it tartar. Plaque, the mass of sticky bacteria keeps forming every day. The bacteria can penetrate the calculus and reach the tooth surface and destroy tooth attachment membranes and bone. The longer This debris stays below your gum line, bone, tooth supporting structures are slowly being destroyed. Blood on your toothbrush, bad breath, bad taste will continue. There is no cure for gum disease. We control it with good home care and regular dental check-ups. To get rid of gum disease in one treatment the latest treatment is called LANAP. CORRECT FLOSSING, CORRECT BRUSHING, TONGUE CLEANING, AND REGULAR DENTAL CHECK-UPS ARE HOW WE TAKE CARE OF OUR TEETH. I HOPE THIS HELPS YOU. READ MORE
How do you talk clearly with dentures?
Speaking clearly can take time. The most common problem with speaking is making sure that your dentures fit. YOU HAVE A TISSUE SIDE THAT RESTS ON YOUR GUM TISSUE. OUR MOUTH TISSUES ARE SENSITIVE THAT A STRAND OF HAIR CAN BE FELT. IF YOUR TISSUES AND BONE SOCKETS ARE NOT HEALED, YOU MAY NEED AN ADJUSTMENT TO THE TISSUES SIDEOF YOUR DENTURE. YOU AND YOUR DENTIST HAVE TO BE PATIENT AND WORK TOGETHER. BEFORE YOU EVEN HAVE YOUR DENTURES PLACED IN YOUR MOUTH, TECHNICIANS AND DENTISTS FEEL THE TISSUE SIDE AND THE SIDE OF YOUR DENTURE THAT YOU FEEL WITH YOUR TONGUE AND CHEEKS ARE EXAMINED FOR ROUGH AND SHARP AREAS AND ARE POLISHED/SMOOTHED BEFORE BEING PLACED IN YOUR MOUTH. Your upper and lower dentures are checked so when you bring your U/L dentures together like when you chew, no area is having more pressure placed on the gum tissue. Any adjustments should be made by your dentist. It is Important that you have all adjustments done when you receive your dentures. EACH PATIENT IS DIFFERENT AND DENTIST AND PATIENT SHOULD WORK TOGETHER. FOLLOW DIRECTIONS YOU ARE GIVEN. EAT SOFT FOODS, KEEP YOUR DENTURES CLEAN. DENTURES SHOULD BE REMOVED AT NIGHT! DENTURES SHOULD BE BRUSHED, TISSUE SIDE AND THE SURFACE SIDE YOU SEE IN YOUR MOUTH. DENTURES SHOULD BE SOAKED OVERNIGHT. SOAKING IN CLEAN WATER; REMOVE ANY ADHESIVE BEFORE SOAKING. IF YOU ARE USING A SOAKING SOLUTION, CHANGE THE SOLUTION DAILY. THE PARTICLES OF DEBRI YOU SEE ON THE BOTTOM ARE ROTTING FOOD PARTICLES. WARNING: DO NOT SOAK DENTURES IN ANY CHLORINE BLEACH (IT TURNS THE PINKISH PART WHITE). HYDROGEN PEROXIDE 3%--THE SMOOTH PINKISH AREA BECOMES ROUGH AND POROUS. READ MORE
Can you floss between implants?
If you floss and brush correctly every day, you will keep your natural teeth, dental veneers, crowns, and implants. When you have your teeth cleaned, have any dental work done, ask your doctor how to clean your teeth. If you do not floss, you will eventually lose your teeth. It will take a long time, but you will eventually lose your teeth. Flossing correctly and brushing correctly should be a pleasant experience. Raking and snapping floss around your gum line will irritate this PRECIOUS tissue. READ MORE
Can you get dental anesthesia for getting braces on?
Usually no dental anesthesia is used for applying braces. There will be discomWfort when you move teeth. Usually over the counter pain medication takes care of it. There are different methods that dentists use to straighten teeth. Whether an ALIGNER - clear one piece appliance or attachments placed on individual teeth are used, there will be some discomfort moving teeth. While placing the appliance or when a new ALIGNER is given, you may have some discomfort. While you are in the dentist's office, you may feel a tight pressure on certain teeth. As teeth are moving, bone is being broken down and bone is rebuilding in your jaw. This is done gradually. If you are given instructions of things you should be doing, please follow them. Your doctor will provide you with instructions if you are having any discomfort while in the office or at home. READ MORE
What are the problems with dental implants?
DENTAL IMPLANTS CAN BE A GOOD INVESTMENT. THE PROBLEM IS PATIENTS LOOK AT A DENTAL SERVICE AND WANT IT. ANYTHING TAKEN CARE OF WILL LAST. MANY TIMES DENTISTS WILL GIVE PATIENTS A SET OF INSTRUCTIONS AND PATIENTS PICK AND CHOOSE THE ONES THEY WILL FOLLOW. THEN DENTISTS ARE REMINDED THAT "YOUR SERVICE DIDN'T WORK". THE REAL PROBLEM IS DENTISTS DO THEIR WORK, BUT PATIENTS DON'T BELIEVE THAT CLEANING THEIR MOUTHS CORRECTLY DAILY IS IMPORTANT. WITH SCIENCES THERE IS NO PICK AND CHOOSE. We are now being faced with the PANDEMIC. PEOPLE THOUGHT THEY COULD FORCE OFFICIALS TO DO WHAT THEY WANT. THE VIRUS IS GOING TO KEEP GROWING AND INFECTING. THE ONLY WAY FOR US TO SURVIVE IS TO FOLLOW SCIENCE TO PROTECT OUR POPULATION. GUNS ARE USELESS AGAINST AN INVISIBLE VIRAL ENEMY. IF YOU ARE CONSIDERING IMPLANTS, YOU HAVE TO MAKE SURE YOU ARE FOLLOWING ALL THE DIRECTIONS. I HAVE WRITTEN ARTICLES AND GAVE DETAILED CORRECT FLOSSING AND CORRECT BRUSHING, AND OTHER INSTRUCTIONS. IT WOULD BE GREAT IF THIS WERE MADE AVAILABLE FOR EVERYONE. READ MORE
Can you replace a crown with a veneer?
When a natural tooth is prepared for a crown, a portion of the natural tooth SURFACE is removed. That is the sides, biting surfaces all around your tooth. Once a portion of your tooth is removed and is replaced with a restorative material, this area must be cleaned daily. This area has to be flossed and brushed correctly. The area where the crown and natural tooth meet has to be cleaned daily to remove the plaque that forms every day. Whether we eat or not, plaque forms, and if it is not removed with CORRECT flossing and brushing will crystallize in 24-48 hours. Now we have saliva. Our saliva contains calcium. Calcium when it hardens becomes CALCULUS or TARTAR. CRYSTALLIZED PLAQUE and hardened TARTAR irritate the gum line tissue. When this tissue is irritated, your gum line area produces chemicals to neutralize this attack. (This IS A GOOD THING). AT THE SAME TIME, THESE CHEMICALS dissolve your attached GINGIVA. This is bad. Dissolving your attached gingiva (no matter how slowly) eventually will lead to loss of attached gingiva. Your ATTACHED GINGIVA prevents food from going down to your roots area. We all need to clean the gum area where the teeth and gum tissue meet. If you have natural teeth, you have to clean the gum-tooth area. If you have a crown, you have the crown tooth junction and your gum tissue. You have to clean this area. Even though you can't see the mico-sized smutz, it still is dissolving your gum line tissue and must be removed every day. READ MORE
Why do you rinse with salt water after a root canal?
Salt water is one of the oldest, simplest, basic and cheapest TREATMENT you can use for inside your mouth and other parts of your body. Many patients will use it once and stop. Rinsing with warm salt water should be several times a day especially after eating. Salt water kills bacteria, soothes irritated tissues. You do not make your salt water solution too salty. Eating a whole bag of chips can make your mouth, tongue, lips and gums very irritated. Using too hot water can burn your mouth. I never liked using cold salt water. You can use salt water and ajust the temperature you like and it is cheap. You can choose the type of water you use. If you are out, many places offer free hot water for tea. Take the hot water, add some cold water to adjust the temperature to your liking. Restaurants offer free salt packs. You can rinse your mouth as often as you like. READ MORE

Areas of research
Dr. Tarnoski's personal research is FACIAL PAIN.. Besides offering general dentistry,
the office works with FACIAL PAIN patients who have been in PAIN for more than
18 months. Those patients who have been treated for TMJ but have not had any significant relief, there are other contributing possibilities. For these PAIN patients, our advice is that nothing be done that can't be reversed. Extracting teeth, full mouth extraction, root canal on demand. If you can't stand the teeth in your mouth, how do expect to wear a denture?
Our second area of special interest is in treating gum disease. Using the Millennium Periolase MVP-7 Laser(TM), all gum disease bacteria is removed in ONE TREATMENT-NO CUTTING/NO SEWING. LESS PAIN. This laser was built to treat gum disease. Your body's own stem cells help to restore the supporting bone and tissues. This laser and the treatment, LANAP, for natural teeth, and LAPIP for infected implants, is FDA approved.
We also help you design your own home care. Gum disease and mouth infection will be the NEW FRONTIER to maintain your body's health.

Dr. Tarnoski is a Dentist currently serving patients with Philadelphia Dental Laser & Cosmetic Dentistry, LLC. Located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Philadelphia Dental Laser & Cosmetic Dentistry, LLC remains dedicated to helping patients depending on their specific needs. The laser also aids in the sealing of the pocket, where the bacteria resided, so no new germs can enter. Dr. Tarnoski earned her bachelor’s degree in history and elementary education, as well as her master’s degree in education from Wilkes College in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. She then spent the next few years teaching within the Wilkes-Barre School District, where she received the PTA’s Lifetime Membership Award for Service. The award is the highest honor from the nation’s largest child advocacy organization and it is given to the person who daily lives out his or her commitment to children. Experiencing challenges as a child with some dental care she received, Dr. Tarnoski decided to capitalize on her background in education and pursue a degree in dental medicine from Temple University. She is a recipient of the Clairol Take Charge Award for women who have overcome obstacles and changed the course of their lives and who can serve as role models for other women. Dentistry, also known as Dental and Oral Medicine, is a branch of medicine that consists of the study, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases, disorders, and conditions of the oral cavity. Dr. Tarnoski has been practicing dentistry since 1987 and has continued her field of study by taking continuing education courses in periodontal disease, implant surgery, cosmetic dentistry and laser dentistry.
