Get to know General Surgeon Dr. Enoch M. Sanders Jr., who serves patients throughout the State of Virginia.

A skilled general surgeon, Dr. Sanders Jr. is affiliated with Inova Virginia Surgery Associates, serving patients in the Fair Oaks and Alexandria areas. He wants his patients to have a great educational experience and hopes to teach them about their disease and educate them on preventative measures and what, if anything, can be done to avoid having future problems.

Expecting patients to be apprehensive and scared when coming to his office, he wants them to feel relaxed after they have been empowered with knowledge of their disease process and treatment options. He considers knowledge to be the most important thing about any surgery and believes the more knowledge a surgeon has, the more he/she can be at his/her personal best.

“I enjoy being a surgeon because of the immediate result I see after performing procedures such as fixing a hernia or curing someone’s gallbladder disease. Nothing is as gratifying as knowing how much I can help a patient by operating on an obstruction or removing a tumor. I was drawn to the practical hands-on approach the field requires” expressed the doctor.

Before embarking on his professional journey, Dr. Sanders Jr. earned his medical degree from the Drexel University College of Medicine in 2001, and completed his residency in general surgery at the Graduate Hospital in 2006. Later, he completed his fellowship in otolaryngology at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in 2007.

A Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), the doctor is board-certified in general surgery by the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The ABS is an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge.

Among his other roles, he can be found on staff at Inova Alexandria Hospital, Inova Fairfax Hospital, Inova Fair Oaks Hospital, and Inova Mount Vernon Hospital.

General surgery is a surgical specialty that focuses on abdominal contents including the esophagus, stomach, small bowel, colon, liver, pancreas, gallbladder, appendix and bile ducts, and often the thyroid gland. A general surgeon performs a wide range of abdominal surgeries for many forms of intestinal and abdominal wall neoplasms, gallbladder disease, gastric and pancreatic disease. They follow the patient through critical care and surgical recovery all the way to outpatient care.
