A highly trained physician, Dr. Fernandez-Martorell is affiliated with Rady Children’s Specialists of San Diego, providing neonatal-perinatal medicine services at Rady Children’s Hospital – San Diego, and pediatric cardiology services at Rady Children’s Cardiology Clinic.

With over 25 years of experience in medicine, his primary clinical interests are congenital heart disease, persistent pulmonary hypertension in newborns, high-frequency oscillatory ventilation and minimal invasive administration of surfactant.

Back in the early days of his academic career, Dr. Fernandez-Martorell graduated with his medical degree from the Universidad la Salle in Mexico. He completed his residency at the University of Texas A&M Driscoll Children’s Hospital, and his fellowship at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine.

Subsequent to his education, the doctor attained board certification in neonatal-perinatal medicine and pediatrics through the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP). The mission of the ABP is to advance child health by certifying pediatricians who meet standards of excellence and are committed to continuous learning and improvement.

Moreover, he is board-certified in pediatric cardiology by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Neonatology is a subspecialty of pediatrics that consists of the medical care of newborn infants, especially ill or premature newborns. It is a hospital-based specialty and is usually practiced in neonatal intensive care units. Neonatologists generally diagnose and treat newborns with conditions such as breathing disorders, infections, and birth defects, as well as coordinating care and medically managing newborns born prematurely, critically ill, or in need of surgery.

Pediatrics is the branch of medicine that involves the medical care of infants, children, and adolescents, while cardiology is a branch of medicine that deals with the disorders of the heart as well as some parts of the circulatory system. Pediatric cardiologists specialize in diagnosing and treating heart problems in children. In those children who might need heart surgery, pediatric cardiologists work closely with pediatric heart surgeons to determine the best treatments and interventions.

Among his most notable achievements, Dr. Fernandez-Martorell has been the recipient of the Patients’ Choice Award (2018, 2017), and On-Time Doctor Award (2018).
