Her acclaimed career in medicine began in 1980 when she graduated with her medical degree from Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She then went on to complete her internship and residency at the University of Chicago Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois, followed by her fellowship at the UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital in Pittsburg.

Before long, she became board-certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to promoting high quality patient care for the public through the initial and continuing certification of psychiatrists and neurologists.
