Dr. Harnick is a licensed clinical psychologist. She is the President and CEO of West Maui Counseling Center in Lahaina, Hawaii. West Maui Counseling Center is a group mental health care practice comprised of professional psychologists and mental health practitioners who provide mental health services with integrated medical services to the Maui community. “Through the therapeutic process, our patients recognize their own strengths and resiliency, heal from the stress and pain that has occurred in their lives, and thrive in the face of adversity while receiving primary medical, psychiatric, and psychological care all in the same place. Dr. Harnick earned her Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Loyola University Maryland and her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Maryland, College Park. She then went on to complete her predoctoral internship at the University of Notre Dame and her postdoctoral clinical fellowship at The George Washington University in Washington, D.C. She also completed a postdoctoral Master of Science in Clinical Psychopharmacology (MSCP) in 2013.
Dr. Harnick has worked in large hospital settings, including the Department of Medical Psychology at Johns Hopkins Hospital, the University of Maryland Medical System, and Sheppard Pratt Hospital. She also has specialized experience and training in the treatment of PTSD, dissociative disorders, and co-occurring mental health issues related to severe and chronic trauma.
Dr. Harnick is board certified in clinical psychology by the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP). The ABPP is the primary organization for specialty board certification in psychology. Furthermore, Dr. Harnick is certified by the National Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology.
Dr. Harnick is a Fellow of the American Academy of Clinical Psychology. She is also a member of the American Psychological Association and the Hawaii Psychological Association. Recently, Dr. Harnick was elected into the leadership of the Hawaii Psychological Association, where she serves on the Board of Directors as Clinical Representative, focusing on issues pertaining to the clinical practice of psychology. She also serves on the Board of Directors for Mental Health America of Hawaii – Maui County Branch and is involved in legislative advocacy work, lobbying for improved access to quality mental health care for the Maui community.
Dr. Harnick also volunteers her time serving on the Board of Directors for The West Maui Taxpayers Association – an organization focused on identifying the needs of the West Maui community and lobbying county and state governments for support of important community projects. She was awarded the first inaugural alumni award from her doctoral program at Loyola University Maryland for advocacy for professional psychology.
Before opening West Maui Counseling Center in 2011, Dr. Harnick served as a staff psychologist at Molokai Community Health Center from 2010-2012. Before moving to West Maui, she lived in Hana and practiced at the Hana Community Health Center from 2008-2011, serving the residents of rural East Maui.
Psychology is the science of behavior and mind. It includes the study of conscious and unconscious phenomena, as well as feeling and thought. Licensed clinical psychologists are professionals who are qualified to provide direct services to patients. Their work may include administering and interpreting cognitive and personality tests, diagnosing mental illness, creating treatment plans, and conducting psychotherapy. Dr. Harnick works with adolescents and adults with a wide range of mental health concerns, as well as specializes in recovery from trauma/abuse and women’s mental health.
In her spare time, Dr. Harnick enjoys spending time with family and friends, going to the beach with her dogs, and snorkeling. She is an avid pool crasher and also riding on the back of her husband’s motorcycle with a helmet, of course.
