What can I do to naturally build immunity for my 5 year old?
Excellent Proactive question! What I love to do with my little patients is to use both food and supplements that are guaranteed to not react with anything else they may be doing and or taking. Foods that boost the immune are: Citrus (high in vitamin C), Arceola Cherries (high in vitamin C), and Carrots, Cantaloupe, Sweet Potatoes (all have vitamin A). Make sure not to over cook and remove the amazing nutrients found in these foods. My favorite immune boosting supplement is Elderberry. It can easily be found as a yummy tasting syrup for kiddos to take during the flu/cold season. Hope that helps! READ MORE
Can diet influence our sleep?
Yes, how we eat dramatically impacts how we sleep, via two very different pathways. The first is the insulin/blood sugar pathway: If we eat lots of carbohydrates prior to going to bed, we are much more likely to wake up in 3-4 hours unable to sleep soundly because our "Brain" and body will be hungry for more energy. Therefore, eating more fat (healthy fats of course) and proteins at our last meal help us to potentially stay asleep longer. The second pathway that foods impact our sleep is with foods that are prone to causing inflammation in the body. These foods can trigger a stress response and increase our cortisol levels. Cortisol is the hormone that controls our sleep wake cycle; if this elevates, then we wake up, typically between 2-4AM, and find it difficult to fall back asleep. READ MORE
Is Propidren safe and effective for hair loss? How does it work?
Propidren blocks DHT (dihydrotestosterone) which is the most common hormone causing hair loss in both women and men. Timing is completely dependent on the amount of that hormone as well as your own body's clearance ability. Although it is not dangerous to lower a females DHT levels I always think that any time you are taking anything to lower hormones you should make sure (for both financial and impactful reasons) that you are targeting the RIGHT hormone. Plus if you are a nursing mom I would NOT recommend adding anything that might impact hormones without speaking to either your OB/GYN or Pediatrician. I would also highly encourage you to get tested. Ask that a doctor run a complete hormone panel (Estradiol, progesterone, DHEA, Testosterone, DHT, Cortisol, TSH, T4 and T3). READ MORE
