The finding of "haziness" means this is consistent with a low level of inflammation, which is along the lower limits of detectability using a CT scan. In other words, there may be a low level of IBD taking place. Misty/hazy mesentery is a term used to describe the CT appearance of mesenteric fat with increased attenuation. Just as with fat stranding elsewhere, a number of processes can lead to the appearance including infiltration by inflammatory cells, edema, lymphatic accumulation, hemorrhage, tumor infiltration, and fibrosis. A well-educated radiologist, Dr. Barakos is the Director of Neuroimaging at California Pacific Medical Center. He specializes in neuroradiology, with a special interest in pediatric neuroimaging.
A part of Sutter Health, California Pacific Medical Center is one of the largest not-for-profit medical centers in California. With four campuses located throughout San Francisco, it provides exemplary inpatient emergency and outpatient services, including specialized care for women and children, organ transplant programs, and innovative orthopedic treatments.
Having worked with Bioclinica for the past 15 years, Dr. Barakos serves as the lead neuroradiologist, and has participated in over 30 phase 3 neurodegenerative disease drug trials. He can also be found on staff at the Davies Campus and St. Luke’s Campus of California Pacific Medical Center.
Educated in the United States, he earned his medical degree from the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California. He then went on to complete his internship, residency in radiology, and fellowship in neuroradiology at the UCSF Medical Center.
Having authored many book chapters and articles in peer-reviewed radiological journals, Dr. Barakos is board-certified in both diagnostic radiology and neuroradiology by the American Board of Radiology (ABR). The ABR is a not-for-profit physician-led organization that oversees the certification and ongoing professional development of specialists in diagnostic radiology, interventional radiology, radiation oncology, and medical physics.
