Get to know Cardiothoracic Surgeon Dr. Ronald C. Hill, who served patients in Asheville, North Carolina.

With nearly 45 years of industry experience to his credit, Dr. Hill is a board-certified cardiothoracic surgeon who is retired from practice. He served as the Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Charles George Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Asheville, North Carolina. 

From 2007 to 2015, he was a Consulting Professor of Surgery at the Duke University School of Medicine. Prior to this, he held multiple positions for West Virginia University, including a Clinical Professor of Surgery at the School of Osteopathic Medicine from 1999 to 2007, a Professor of Surgery from 1996 to 2007, an Associate Professor from 1990 to 1996, and an Assistant Professor of Surgery from 1985 to 1990. 

While at West Virginia University School of Medicine, Dr. Hill was the Chairman of the Institutional Review Board from 1994 to 2004 and the Program Director for the Department of Surgery from 1998 to 2003. Likewise, he was a Consultant for the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center from 1985 to 2007, a Student Coordinator for the Department of Surgery at West Virginia University from 1986 to 1997, and the Director of Surgical Research with the Department of Surgery at West Virginia University from 1986 to 1988. Additionally, he was a member of the Surgical Education and Self-Assessment Programs, as well as on the Ad-Hoc Committee of the Merit Review Board for Cardiovascular Studies at the Washington D.C. Department of Veterans Administration from 1988 to 1990.

Furthermore, Dr. Hill worked in several roles for Suncrest United Methodist Church, formerly Drummond Chapel United Methodist Church, on the Council on Evangelism from 1999 to 2001. He served as an Annual Conference Delegate from 1995 to 1997 and as a Finance Committee Member from 1994 to 1996. 

Before embarking on his professional path, he earned his medical degree from the West Virginia University School of Medicine in 1974. He then went on to complete his residency in general surgery at Duke University Hospital in Durham, North Carolina, followed by his fellowship in thoracic surgery at the same educational venue. Before long, the doctor became board-certified in thoracic and cardiac surgery by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery (ABTS) The primary purpose of the ABTS is to protect the public by establishing and maintaining high standards in thoracic surgery.

Beyond his efforts within the field, he attained memberships with several professional organizations, including the American Association for Thoracic Surgery and the Cardiothoracic Surgery Network. He was also recognized as a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the Association for Academic Surgery, the Sabiston Society, the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association, and the Society of Thoracic Surgeons.
