In addition to his knowledge, compassion, and surgical expertise, Dr. Ryan is dedicated to providing his patients the best outcome for recovery and helping them regain optimal orthopedic performance. As a retired Colonel in the U.S. Army, he still serves his country with his dedicated treatment of soldiers.

The doctor holds privileges at the following hospitals and medical centers: Ascension St. John Macomb/Oakland, Ascension St. John Providence, Ascension St. John Providence Park, Ascension St. John Surgery Center, and Surgeons Choice Medical Center.

Before embarking on his professional journey, Dr. Ryan received his undergraduate degree in the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York. He received his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and completed both his internship and residency at Letterman Army Medical Center, Presidio, of San Francisco, California.

Thereafter, he completed a fellowship in sports medicine at Hughston Orthopedic Clinic in Columbus, Georgia. He served as the Chief of Orthopedics at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point for seven years and during that time developed and directed the Army Sports Medicine fellowship.

Subsequent to his education, Dr. Ryan attained board certification in orthopedic surgery through the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery (ABOS). The ABOS is an organization with the goal of establishing educational and professional standards for orthopedic residents and surgeons as well as evaluating the qualifications and competence of orthopedic surgeons.

As a result of his professional competence, he is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (FAAOS) and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS).

Orthopedic surgery is the branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. Orthopedic surgeons use both surgical and non-surgical means to treat musculoskeletal trauma, spine diseases, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors, and congenital disorders.

Throughout his extensive career, Dr. Ryan has cared for professional, college, high school and recreational athletes. He has also participated in many clinical and basic science research projects and was chosen as the Commander of the U.S. Army Institute for Surgical Research in Texas.
