Back in 1981, he received his medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, before completing his residency in general surgery at Emory University Hospital in 1986. He then went on to complete two consecutive fellowships in cardiothoracic surgery and vascular surgery at the Texas Heart Institute in 1987 and 1988, respectively.

As a testament to his success, the doctor is board-certified in cardiothoracic surgery by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery (ABTS). He is a proud member of the Cardiothoracic Surgery Network, the International Society for Minimally Invasive Cardiothoracic Surgery, the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association, and The Society of Thoracic Surgeons.
