Get to know Ophthalmologist Dr. Alejandro Bevacqua, who serves patients in New Jersey.

Listed as a Top Ophthalmologist by “Consumers Research Council of America”, Dr. Bevacqua has been in private practice since 1998, specializing in medicine and surgery of the eyes. He works alongside Drs. Robert Wertheimer & Seema Shah at Essex Eye Physicians with offices in West Caldwell and Montclair, New Jersey.

The trio are able to provide complete care for the eye, including: cataracts, glaucoma, corneal diseases, diseases of the retina, vision disorders related to the nervous system, exams for glasses and contact lenses, LASIK surgery, Botox for blepharospasm and reduction of wrinkles, and laser vision correction. 

Having personally performed thousands of surgical and refractive procedures, Dr. Bevacqua is highly regarded among his peers as being a premier eye surgeon, receiving surgical referrals from regional ophthalmologists. 

He performs state-of-the-art surgery, including no-stitch cataract surgery and custom cornea LASIK, as well as has extensive experience in diagnosing and treating cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic eye disease.

Academically, Dr. Bevacqua received his undergraduate degree from the State University of New York at Binghamton in 1989 and his medical degree from New York Medical College in 1994. Following medical school, he completed a three-year residency in ophthalmology at Nassau County Medical Center in New York where he trained in medicine and surgery of the eyes and served as chief resident. He also spent several years during his training at a regional trauma center treating traumatic eye injuries. 

A Diplomate of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, he is board-certified in ophthalmology by the American Board of Ophthalmology (ABO). The ABO is an independent, non-profit organization responsible for certifying ophthalmologists in the United States of America.

In the state of New Jersey, Dr. Bevacqua is affiliated with Ridgedale Surgery Center, Saint Barnabas Medical Center, Englewood Hospital, Hackensack Meridian Health Mountainside Medical Center, and Holy Name Medical Center.

Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine and surgery, which deals with the diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders. Ophthalmologists are experts in the diseases, functions, and anatomy of the eye. They may provide routine care such as vision testing, as well as prescribe and fit eyeglasses or contact lenses. However, ophthalmologists are also surgeons. They repair traumatic injuries to the eye and perform cataract, glaucoma, retinal, and corneal surgery.
